MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Exhaust mounting 1275
Working from a very clean sheet of paper (the car is so clean you could at off it), both rear exhaust mountings are a bit of a mystery. I am guessing that the brackets seem to fit at the rear bumper mountings, but am not sure. Does anyone have a photo of the rear silencer mountings going across the rear of the car, particularly showing how the mounts attach to the body. Thanks Dominic |

They should bolt up into holes in the boot floor. They don't use the bumper mounting holes. I don't have a photo, unfortunately. |

Domonic, as you have a Heritage shell it may have fixings/captive for both the single box system and the across the back double box as your copying an earlier car you'd be after the single box exiting on l/h/s I can't give you fixing locations as my exhaust isn't standard ETA: based on what Dave has put I guess it'll be the captive nut(?) near where the later cars have the boot bracing plates |

On my 71 its just a bracket welded to the muffler and bolted to the boot floor with some thick soft rubber washers to absorb any vibration I think the wrap around muffler is for the 1500 Prop |

How's this from my '73 RWA?? Rear right. Rear left pretty much the same. I can get a pic tomrrow. You can just see the other set of 3 bumper captive nuts behind the exhaust bracket. |

Prop, post facelift 1275s had the across the back silencer box with tail on r/h/s |

More. Does this help?
|

Domonic, Lawrence has put up a very useful photo, I'm only saying that on a Heritage shell there might be a slight variation in the position and type of those two fixing shown (on the photo l/h/s of the boot) |

Thanks lawerance, So thats what those nuts are for....the more you know :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) Prop |

Thanks for the photos and other information. There are no suitable holes on the back of the car, and I have an exhaust that has a box between spring and tank, and a second box running laterally between tank and rear valance. So it looks as if I will have to do some careful offering up and drilling - it looks as if there is some reinforcing of the floor at the points where the brackets mount so I will have to look for those. Interior is done, brakes are all done, all suspension is in and all electrics are finished, engine is ready, head should appear from Peter Burgess any day. Just a few cooling hoses are missing, and the hose clips for the oil pressure gauge line. We are now at a standstill because of the broken front gearbox cover, which is being replaced under guarantee but has to get here from Australia. So close but yet so far..... |

you've got me confused now I thought you were doing a 1967(?) car, the double box is for split bumper, very late '69 on cars ETA: perhaps I've got myself confused as I keep forgetting you have a LHD |
Nigel Atkins |
I got mixed up too. I thought it was a 71, but now I realise I got that from Prop's post. However. If you are fitting the 2 box system, that's exactly what mine is, and what the photo's show you. Mine's a RHD, but that doesn't alter the silencers does it? Who's got a pic of a LHD late box system? |
Lawrence Slater |
RHD/LHD should make no difference. |
Dave O'Neill2 |
So theres something missing here?
|
Steven Devine |
Yup steven. The sun to melt those icicles :). |
Lawrence Slater |
Steven, as Dominic was asking about rear exhaust mounting then yes there is something missing in your photo :D you'd get a rare tune out of that tail pipe on some of our roads over here |

The car is a Heritage Shell, and was originally a GAN4 car. The previous owner bought a LOT of new parts, which we have been fitting over the last eight weeks. One of these is a twin box exhaust, which according to the Moss catalogue is correct for the serial number of the original car. But of course the early heritage shell is a hybrid, and is missing some of the holes you would normally expect..... |
Dominic Clancy |
Dominic, GAN4 in the UK would be single box which now reminds me that European and US cars got the twin box before UK cars I had a look in the boot of my later (RWA) Heritage shell and it's same as Lawrence's photos with captive nuts on the small plates inside, either side, of the boot but on mine the nuts look more diagonally offset on each plate (I thought earlier mine where different to photo) perhaps you could add LHD (USA?) to your post name or added vehicle profile to help prevent (not just mine) confusion on model |
Nigel Atkins |
Hi Nigel Thanks, but as I am a visitor here (home is the MGA board) making a change to the profile may make people think I had crossed to the dark side after more than 25 years with an A! Dominic |
Dominic Clancy |
Dominic, you could put up a viewable profile with details of both cars, MGA first of course, then remove the midget when you're sure the car is finished and all wrinkles ironed out and you'll discover some current and past MGA owners here |
