MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Exhaust system choice
Mk2 Sprite 948cc - I have modified my engine with ported head, SW05 cam and LCB. What is the best exhaust /silencer to use? Will the standard be too restrictive? How about standard 1098/early 1275 single box system - this is larger bore than 948. I think big bore with RC40 is too large. Any suggestions? Oh, and I'd like something that sounds sporty - the boy racer never leaves us no matter what age we are! Thanks Les |

IIRC the original frogeye silencer was a straight through system and was reccomended many years ago as tuning aid for other A series cars. Whether that still holds true I don't know! As long as the system is minimally restrictive then you should be OK, but I don't understand why you feel the RC40 is too big, wasn't it originally developed for minis? Graham. |

For my 948 Frogeye I phoned up Maniflow and asked them. They were really friendly, and recommended a not-too-big bore system. Where did your LCB come from? What size is that? |
Nick |
Nick LCB is a Maniflow from Magicmidget. The bore on the outlet is 40mm, my standard 948 pipe is about 31mm OD. Les |

"LCB is a Maniflow from MagicMidget." Les, say no more, pick up the phone and ask Kim's advice, he will know what's best to go with the manifold. |

a medium bor rc40?? seems like the obvious choice. take one with just the back box that will sound great ;) |

I am almost decided on going with the RC40, seems to be most peoples favourite. However I am a bit concerned about clearance, I it believe helps with car being 1/4 eliptic. However I have a panhard rod fitted is this likely to cause a problem? I was trying to upload a pictue but told it was too large - any suggestions? Anyonre got any pictures of an installed RC40? I had a RC40 on my 68 Cooper, excellent exhaust. |

Les, In my opinion the standard MG single box is a bit 'poppy' i.e. it's loud but also higher pitched. The RC40 exhaust box size (volume) is much greater and acentuates the lower tones, which is more pleasant. I was fortunate to be given a 2nd hand Ducati motorcycle exhaust box which is a straight through system like the RC40 rear box, (but a bit lighter as it's carbon fibre with stainless end caps), it's the best sounding exhaust I've had. Whatever you do I'd recommend a single box, larger than the original MG item, and straight through with glass packing. James |

Thanks James. Anyone know the dimensions of the RC40 silencer. Les |

My RC40 had to have a special bracket made which bolts it to the underside of the rear bumperette mount. This is beacause it was designed to come out of the middle (rear0 of a Mini. I had heard that they are now making a Spridget based RC40 but I may be wrong. Alan Anstead made the bracket for me. I'll see if I have an image when I get home. |

Les, Here is a photo of my silencer which I believe is a RC40. As for dimensions (all mm), the silencer is 480 x 150 x 110 with the pipes 48.7 od. The exit pipe has a 45deg bend after 120 with the final section 180. HTH. |

Thanks Doug. I have some pictures showing the area around my panhard rod but cant upload them - too big possibly? How do you upload pictures? Les |
Les Robinson |
Les, There may be other ways to upload large photos but this how I overcame the problem. I opened the original photo in Photoshop Elements and then, after setting the resolution to minimum, was saved with a different title. This reduced the original file from 1.33MB to 197KB which then allowed me to upload the low resolution copy. HTH Doug |

Thanks again Doug. I have 3 pictures of my panhard installation, what I want to know is will an RC40 fit. Thanks for your help, hopefully here is picture 1. Les |

It's going to be close... mine fits (on 1/2 elliptic car) with about half an inch between the spring and the silencer and about an inch between the silencer and the exhaust, so cose that i popped a stainless heatshield in there just in case. it would fit better if it was in at 90 degrees, but it looks a bit silly form the back IMO it might also fit if you hang it lower so it misses the panhard bits? The actual silencer is only 27 quid or something from minispares, almost cheap enough to just get one and see if it fits, then take it back if it doesn't :) pic of mine http://www.flickr.com/photos/34910348@N08/3404316015/ (love the smell of hot waxoyl) minispares silencer http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=34777&title=RC40%20CLASSIC%20REAR%20BOX%20ONL... |
