MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fastners
So not a post war midget question but a pre war one I need some (4 to be exact) 1/4 BSF bolts. But with the semi domed slotted head (ho do you call them in English)preferably stainless or chromed I also need a source where I can buy solid domed head rivets. Preferably not by the 100 but in smaller ammounts Annyone know a good place to buy these? |

Onno - The only place I know of is here in the US - British Tools and Fasteners at: http://www.britishfasteners.com/?gclid=CNHFr4qXiqUCFRhzgwodlwx5Mg I would suggest that you go the to T-ABC and/or the Pre War BBS and post your question there as there are undoubtedly places in Europe or UK that sell the older British fasteners. Cheers - Dave |

I am a regulair there but they have a tendency to go to the expensive resto shops. But I know all of us here are cheap b##%!^&% ;) Happen to know the correct name for the head I discribed |
Onno Könemann |
sounds like? round head but that's for screws - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw#Screw_head_shapes |
N Atkins |
Cheesehead or panhead? |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
Which one has a chamfer first (like a counter sunk) and a slight round after that? |
Onno Könemann |
Have a look at this... http://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screw-fasteners/=elt1b1 |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
now that sounds like raised-countersunk but again usual a screw what's a cheesehead? |
N Atkins |
Ah it is oval or raised head bolt I need seems to be rare with BSF thread |
Onno Könemann |
that the same as raised-countersunk by the look of it, by bolt I assume you mean not all of the length is threaded perhaps a vintage motorbike parts supplier might have what you want or somewhere that supplies parts for pre-war cars it's difficult to get even many unf/unc bits at local suppliers now perhaps a visit to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham might help, pre-war cars on display and some pre-war autojumble |
N Atkins |
By bolt I mean it has thread to go in to a taped hole or bolt opposed to a screw that goes in wood (or steel) I am starting to think there is a reason to go to the "expensive" specialist shops as they can't be bought else where. Thanks for the help Better expensive than not for sale. |
Onno Könemann |
no doubt somewhere someone has these but finding them is a real trick |
N Atkins |
How about these? http://www.classicnutsandbolts.com/default/index.cfm/our-products/ We are proud to launch “The Classic Nuts & Bolts and Marine Fixings Company” online service. We have evolved to become a frontrunner in the supply of nuts, bolts and screws for professionals and enthusiasts alike with the simple mantra – no order to big no order to small. Google found loads of suppliers for solid domed rivets, but none in less than boxes of 100. |

Onno - A screw can be a wood screw or a machine screw. A machine screw has threads all the way up to the head, whereas a bolt will have an non-threaded portion under the head. The screw you are looking for will be an oval head machine screw. I would certainly give Lawrence a try for what you are looking for. Lawrence - even tho I live on the other side of the pond from you, I have bookmarked you website for future reference. N. Atkins A cheese head is just what it sounds like - the head looks like a miniature round of cheese with a slot cut in it. Look at the screws that hold the coil housing to the pump body of a SU fuel pump for an example of a cheese head screw. Cheers - Dave |

Hi David, Sorry, it's not my website. Just the result of a Google search. Sorry, I should have made my post clearer. :) |
Lawrence Slater |
cheers David that site needs developing as you have to know exactly what you want or phone or fax them, that's not how retail sales go over the web I'll email them |

Hi Onno I've used various stainless nut & bolt suppliers here in the UK. One such is D.Middleton & Son (www.stainlessmiddleton.co.uk.) He lists three items under Slotted Machine Screws/Raised Head Contersunk as follows DMD1S901 - 1.5 in long DMD1S900 - 1.0 in long DMD1S899 - 5/8in long The good thing about stainless of course, is that you can trim to length without compromising any plating. You can also stick them in a drill and polish the heads to mirror finish (if not already done)to replicate chrome plating or satinise to perhaps replicate the slightly duller finish of nickel plating. Hope this helps. Regards Keith PS interested in your D-type progress. Always loved MMM cars and did start a J1 restoration many years ago, but sadly, circumstances at the time dictated that it had to go. |

Keith super! That is exactly what i was looking for! No big quantities and a clear website. The D is progressing very slowly though I try to update the photo set from time to time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/onnokonemann/ An up comming wedding using wedding cars tunbridge wells A-series rebuild and generaly life seem to eat my budget so slow progres is all that is possible. |
Onno Könemann |
Hi Keith, very long time no speak - that was the J1 you bought off me, do you know where it is now? |
David Smith |
Hi David Yes,it was the one I got from you. I got the rolling chassis more or less complete plus spent a small fortune at the time (probably still is)on a Phoenix crank and other engine bits. Bit of a blip on the employment front meant it had to go. It went to the "trade" and was initially bought by a name I recognised from MM circles and then I saw it later advertised in the trade. Regards Keith |

Yep that small fortune is one (of several) I am saving up for... Luckly I have job security for the next couple of years since last week ;) |

www.stainlessmiddleton.co.uk like Keith mentioned. Onno, they are very good, ive been at their place during this summer, a shabby old warehouse but very friendly helpfull people. When I found out they had so much choice i started to dismantle half my car on their parking to show them the bold/nut/washer and they searched the right one for me in stainless. AND (very important for us Dutchies, the Yorkshire and Scottisch bunch) very affordable too! |
Arie de Best |
Good to know they have the Arie seal of approval ;) |
Onno Könemann |
Thats what friends are for! Btw, did I mention they promised my a percentage for any dutchman I can pursade to buy from them? :) |
