MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fitting grille
1966 midget with chrome grille. Please look at the photo of the right side of the front shroud - in case you don't know what you are looking at, the big hole that's off the top of the photo is for the heater air inlet hose. Does the bottom bracket of the grille fit into the hole I have arrowed? If so, why is the hole so large? What sort of fittings are used? This is a Heritage shell, so may not be quite as a 1966 car should be. Thanks in anticipation of your replies. Mike |

Mike, The Moss & MGOC catalogues show two screws (GHF425), two washers (PWZ404) and two spire nuts (GHF713) to mount the grille to the large holes in the surround. Simon ’73 Midget |

my '72 grille mounts there, the mashed vertical slat one that came with the car, the 'proper' one i bought and also the one i made. seemed to be held together simply with a 7/16 head bolt with a washer & nut underneath. It's usefully bigger to juggle the grille so it fits well, that's what I found.. |

There is usually a spire nut on the lower bracket, then the self-tapper goes in from below with a large washer. I'm assuming the hole is that big to allow for alignment. |

Thanks one and all. One more thing to cross off the list. |

A real "66 should have a captive nut below and use a bolt from above to fit the grill |

On mine, I put a rubber grommet into those oversized holes and just have two bolts protruding down from the grill which are a push fit into the grommets. The grill is then just held by bolts to the slam panel at the top for speedier removal. |

Guy, you know thats gonna cost you precious points on the Concours Elegance. Is that realy worth it? :) |

Arie, Oh dear - I hadn't thought of that. I will have to shoot myself or I won't win. And as you also know about it I shall have to shoot you too. LOL! |
