MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fitting lock assembly to late 1275

I found today, after doing the work of course, that removing the steering lock assembly on my 1973 midget would have been easy had I (had and) used extra long 6.5mm drill bit(s).

If you're more pliable and dexterous than me then using a junior hacksaw on one or both joins/bolts as well as or instead of the extra long drill bit would also work.

I made things a little easier for myself by removing the (standard, large) steering wheel using the John Twist demonstrated two hammer method. -

I'm looking and looking....I cant seem to find this procedure in the handbook manual!

What did you find this under Nigee?
S

Steve,
the Driver's Handbook isn't a workshop manual. ;)

I didn't check the workshop manuals as I didn't think they'd cover this either (am I wrong about this?).

No you were right! Please mark this day down on the calendar!

That's a fun job to do though isn't it!

He's taking the Mick...Personally I wouldn't stand for that sort of thing - especially from Yanks who invariably fail to understand irony and satire - Tom Lehrer and Niles Crane excepted.

Actually a better method is to put your knees as john did remove the nut and then slide arms thur the wheel and onto the dash then just lift up and rock it a little and the wheel will slide off

usually with a thump to your nose

Oggers,
I often give a deadpan reply and Steve and many others miss the humour or pisstaking often but I think Steve has slowly cottoned on, looks like you missed this one :).

Prop,
I did once take the nut fully off to jingle the steering wheel to loosen it a bit but I must have had three Weetabix for breakfast that day as it came flying off and gave me a fat buzzing lip.

Nigel...

same here....in fact i did it twice and almost blooded my noose the 2nd time...

but i perfer thst over beating tempered steel with a hand sledge....to ke that just looked like a good way to introduce stess fracktures cracks into the steering system

Nigel...I honestly thought you were being serious - perhaps I'm turning into an American....Lord have mercy....
Oggers

You know, I believe you can save face when removing the steering wheel if you leave the nut screwed onto the shaft by a few threads.

Charley

Nah....there was a big enough nut behind the wheel already.......
