MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fitting oil scroll to 1500 and correct oil
Dear learned forum, I have an oil leak coming out of the base of the gearbox bellhousing on my 1500 and as i am having another wise great summer have decided to keep on driving for this summer and then look to take the gearbox out and investigate and fix but a couple of questions. 1) i have a spare gearbox which i split to look at the oil scroll and how this fits on am i correct in thinking that this is just a push fit in the bellhousing and a lump of wood and a mallet should be used to remove, i have three reference manuals and none of them gives an exploded view or instructions on replacement. 2) in an attempt to stem the leak to keep going until the strip out has anyone ever used the Lucas gearbox stabliser which claims to stop minor leaks when mixed i assume with gearbox oil? 3) as the leak has occurred since around the time of my last gearbox oil change in which i picked up modern gearbox oil could i be adding to my own troubles 4) i am sure that the leak is from the gearbox as if i heat the car up to opertaing temp without moving i don't get drips, but in case it's not the scross where else should i be aware of. in anticipation as always i am grateful for your conrtibutions regards Douglas |

How much oil is actually leaking? Mine leaks a bit, but, I just keep it topped up, and it seems to work ok - although, I did actually do a proper oil change after a slight problem (which has, on reflection and inspection, turned out not to be the gearbox after all!) - and the oil leak seems to have become less. |

i would say after a good run and left over night about 20-30 mls. do you think it would be less while running because of the oil scroll? regards Douglas |
