MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ford Type 9 - five speed

You won't find this gear knob in the Ford parts bin!

Daniel Stapleton

Give us a clue then Daniel... which bin could I find a gear knob like that in?

Cheers,

Matt.

Daniel does your wife know you are showing your knob in public? ;)
Onno K

The expensive parts bin! What I'm really proud of is finally plucking up enough courage to drill out the 5/16 UNC thread and tap it M10 x 1.5 without putting a single mark on it.

This isn't really public it's a forum for like minded people...

Sounds top secret stuff! I used to have an E-Type .... it looks kind of familiar!

I Bet nobody has a knob like mine.

After drinking copious amounts of beer, that was pulled using this knob, way back in in 1976, Oss Holland, the bar tender gave me his knob. I've had it in my left hand for many thousands of happy miles since. :).

It used to grace my rib case, but now graces my T9 5-speed.

My knob reaches the gears that other knobs can't reach.

Wot? Nobody likes Heineken? lol

Is it an original A series 5 speed box one?
My datsun box (and nice 1980's period mustard coloured one) has reverse below fifth.
frogeye Gary

Was there an A-series 5 speed box?
Lawrence Slater

Some of the Le Mans Sprites were fitted with 5 speed boxes - a modified MGB 3 spd. V-rare.

Alan, I presume you mean MGB 3-synchro?
Dave O'Neill2

Since we've all started showing each other our knobs, here's my mustartd coloured one from the East (and I don't mean Essex). That strange unusaul glow in the reflection is sunlight!

frogeye Gary

Wow, so there was an early 5 speed for Spridget. Shame they didn't make it more common.

Yes, nice knob Gary.

But what's that hole in your handbrake knob? Security, or disease?
Lawrence Slater

Dave
Oops. You are correct. 3 synchro.
One did come up for sale a while ago, Stateside. It was offered with a fuel injected, Le Mans spec engine.

Supposed security as I think that a padlock is supposed to go therough the hole to stop you pressing the button to realese the handbrake. Two problems with that.
1. The car will still drive away with the handbrake engaged.
2. Even with a padlock in place, the button can still be pressed in far enough to realease the ratchet.

I like it ad a nice period oddity though.
frogeye Gary

And I suppose it does save a bit of weight too. Every little helps. :)

This is the 1st ive heard of a mgb 5 speed box....still I cant imagine why anyone would want it....its to rare to be considard a prize part, I cant imagine it being very long in life, its got to be crazy expensive, I bet its ungodly heavy...and not to mention ...it sets large wads of cash on Fire quickly

If you got one of these then im guessing you also have a shrock super charger hooked up to your 1275....it would be a good match

handbrake security I recall having a hilman hunter many yrs ago that had a 3 or 4 digit combination lock built into the lever .... a bit of useless info there .......
J D Craddock

I had a Hillman hunter too. the later slim body job. 1725cc. I quite liked it.
