MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ford type 9 gearbox slave cylinder.

Hi all,
My 1275 midget has a type 9 gearbox fitted by Frontline in 2008, with a standard midget clutch slave cylinder.

The slave cylinder is now leaking & needs changing.

The top fixing bolt on the cylinder is very close to the chassis rail & cannot be removed.

Can the gearbox be loosened in some way & moved enough to remove the cylinder ?

I've got a jack & axle stands so will be crawling under the car to sort this out.

I've got a nice shiny, made in Taiwan, slave cylinder waiting to be fitted, so any advice on the best way foreward would be appreciated.

Thanks, Alan.

Alan:

After cutting the hole pictured I can now top up the T-9 gearbox (Frontline kit) as well as service the slave quickly and cleanly. Not everyone's cup of tea I know, but a bead of silicone on the cover plate keeps the water out well enough and it all hides neatly behind the vinyl panel. You can't see it in the pic, but the slave fixing bolt is eminently accessible as well. Don't know if the location details are similar for your 1275. Best of luck,

Richard

Devils own job!
A stubby spanner and small hands helps but once you have overcome to make things easier next time make the top hole on your new slave cylinder into a vertical slot.
Screw the top bolt into the bellhousing until there is just room to slide the slotted slave lug under it and you will then only have to pinch the bolt.
Fit a remote bleed valve to make bleeding easier.

Good solution. I have cut out an inpsection panel on BRB for the T9 box fill-up (use a cable for the clutch) and by luck or design it's the same size as the bung used for the std box.

Thanks for the replies, I will follow your advice for making a larger inspection hole, slotting the slave cylinder mount & I have got the bits to make a remote bleed pipe.

I would still welcome some advice on wether I can loosen the gear box mounts to lever it sufficientley to remove the top mounting bolt...I dont want to try that & break something !.

Thanks, Alan.

for topping up the gearbox I got them to drill out a hole and fit a blanking grommet

IF they'd been a good company they'd have done this as part of the installation and put a grommet around the hole drilled for the speedo cable instead of leaving it bare and sharp

I then cut the vinyl panel to give permanent access to the grommet – pity I didn’t measure and it would have helped to make the facing side on an off-set hole but I thought it was so easy a ‘thumb’ measure would do, bad workmanship on my part this time but I didn’t charge for the work or claim to be an expert

my 2009 installation has a different, probably s/h bellhousing and uses the standard slave cylinder with a p*ss-poor clutch arm fixing arrangement
