MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frog seatbelts
Hi all, been a bit of a stranger here for a while now, I’ve tried the search but didn’t find anything. I want to fit seatbelts to my Frogeye as following a recent accident in another car my wife refuses to go in the Sprite until we have belts. I’m assuming that there are not factory provided mounts seeing as belts were not fitted at the factory (unless they were an option or provided for racing?) so can anyone provide information on how you mounted yours and what type of seatbelt was used? I don’t like the idea of an ugly modern inertia reel on display so I’m hoping I can get some nice period looking belts but with the benefit of modern safety! Thanks in advance Mark |

Mark, I fitted three point harness type to mine when I built it, they looked ok and fitted well three bolts one behind seat one either side on the floor. see pic cheers jack. |

My frog (april 1959) had standard seat belt nuts on tunnel and inner sill, 2 bolts in the inner wheel arch, but no seat belts. I guess unless somebody removed them your frog has them too. Flip |

Check www.quickfitsbs.com , its where I got mine from. In all kind collors and webbing available with classic buckles if you want. Im very happy with them, now all I need is time to build them in my midget... |

Thanks guys, will lift the carpet at the weekend and take a look to see if any mounts are visible. Arie, Thanks for the link, the period style belts look perfect, I'm thinking of static lap and diagonal (and keeping them set tight) as I don't know how far forward you will travel with inertia's or are Inertia's the way to go seeing as they have long replaced statics? I bought 3 point harnas with a retractor as i still want to be able to move around a little when wearing the seatbelts(like driving backwards I have to be able to turn my head and torso a little). Because mine is on a retractor it can be disconnected from the retractor and on the sides mountings(for the lap-part) ive got a hook-on system to connect with the eyebolt and can disconnect if i dont want to drive with the seatbelts. Once everything is installed i can put the seatbelts in and out in 5 minutes. In Holland rules are if you have seatbelts in the car you have to wear them or get fined, if there are no seatbelts(classic cars up to 1980?) you free to go. I planned to wear them during events and remove them afterwards but maybe if I get used to them I might keep them in permanent. Ill see if i can dig them up later this day so I can show you by picture: speaks more then thousand words especialy by a dutchman who not knows the english translation for some technical frases/parts. :) |

Same rules here Arie |

Thanks Arie, that would be good, and your English is way better than my Dutch, or any other language for that matter. Hi Gary, very long time no speak, hope you are well? Mark |
Mark M |
Hi Mark, I hope you're both well. What did you crash, the M3 or the camper or something else? |
Gary lazarus |
Something else, an old Corsa runaround/parts chaser etc. Some loon in a Land Rover lost control on a sharp bend in the wet and hit us head on, luckily was fairly low impact speed. Had we been in one of the other cars it could have been a horrible scenario and involved crying on my part I expect. The VW isn't on the road, have a peek: http://s837.photobucket.com/albums/zz291/marktmaguire/VW/?start=all Its keeping me very occupied at weekends! The M3 is long gone, have a TVR Griffith 500 now :oD A nice sensible car to potter about in, ahem. Mark |

A TVR griffith 500? What a nice sensible family car, very practical to pick up stuff from Ikea. :) Finally toke the pictures of my seatbelts. Im gonna buid the retractor in the bootlid and the belt will come thrue the rearparcelshelf, and upwarts to the top of the backrest of the seat, slide under the headrest and form the harnas there. |
Arie de Best |
Very easy releasing it from the retractor on the rear... The chrome eye-bracket is in case the belt needs a bit of giding/sliding-along when it comes thrue the rearshelf. |
Arie de Best |
...and also easy installing/removing it on the sides(lap) of the harnass. Once the retractor and the eye-bolts are propperly fitted it should take more then 2 min. installing/removing the seatbelts.(all theory sofar) ;) |
Arie de Best |
And should be like it once installed. Except for the click-on thingy on the back, that comes to the bottom of the rearparcelshelf where the retractor lip comes out. |
Arie de Best |
Ofcourse your seat doesnt have the headrest but its to give you a kinda of idea whats possible. Quickfit can suply everything you need for installing it with bolts, nuts, washers andso on. What a great way of adding some extra blingbling to your car and use "safety" as an excuse for it! ;) |

I have a similar set-up to aries with the Sabelt harness in my frogeye. It doesn't have a retractor but it does have the additional connector like yours, which allows me to unclip them to get stuff in and out of the back of the Frogeye. I like that arrangement but the scrutineers at the sprints I've done don't seem so keen. Which is all irrelevent as I've got the Safety devices rear 6 point bar and new harness going in in mid November. |

Thanks Arie, Gary, very helpful. |
