MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye Bonnet Help

I am renovating my steel bonnet and need help on some missing bits underneath. Firstly, I think there should be a stiffening strap between the two headlamp housings. Secondly, from this strap I think there should be 2 triangular ish side panels going down to the base of the frog's mouth somewhere. Can anyone help with some photos and maybe even a sketch with measurements. Many thanks
M Price

Any use?

The very earliest bonnets did not have those.

Hi Trevor. Which part are you referring to? The photos show my Frog. It is chassis no 1991. Not many older ones than that around.

The stiffening strap and the panels to feed side panels that feed the air to the radiator.
My car is #1499, and it was missing those items.

I think this is mentioned in Horler's book.

Hi Trevor and Neil,

Trevor, how early is your chassis number?

I have chassis 3331 (but the body is stampped '3000' adjacent to the master cylinder location), and, it does not have the rectangular "radiator shroud" part of the frontgrille mounting assembly. I assume that the "shroud" part was added at a later date to avoid any air recirculation problems around the radiator core. I know for a fact that my car has it's original bonnet.

Ahem, putting brain into gear and looking up Terry Horler's book indicates the mod was put on from chassis no 4695 approx Sept '58 !!!!

Hope this helps you to decide which way you want to move, i.e. keep it original or update.

Hi Trevor, do you have a photo as I would be interested to see.
Thanks,

Hi Trevor, Neil and Peter

Firstly thankyou for the photos Neil, they are just what I need to help me on my quest. Secondly, thanks for the comments on whether the stiffener/shrouds should actually be there or not.
Since posting this thread, I continued digging through google and stumbled across a very useful site in Australia, have a look at the following link
http://www.spriteparts.com.au/tech/variations.html
The yellow frogeye (chassis 4165) doesn't have them, the green frogeye (chassis 30224) does have them. My 58 frogeye is chassis 4343 so historically shouldn't have them by the sounds of it. My bonnet is however a replacement one so must be from a 59-61 model because although the parts are missing, they were there originally as I can see the spot welds where they have been so were robbed for another project I presume.
I will try and put the stiffener/shrouds back on the bonnet because they will do what they say on the tin ie stiffen the floppy front end and shroud the radiator airflow.

If anyone can take a few measurements for me that would also help, ie width and height of stiffener etc. The Triangular shrouds should be easy to work out once I have a stiffener tacked in. Although the little notch towards the top may need a measurement, maybe to miss the radiator?

Now I have your attention, look at my next thread on Frogeye Positioning of Electrics

Many thanks

I have built just htis thing for my bonnet.

The good news is that this is an easy piece of fabrication. A pattern from an old bonnet would be very useful.

Some pics on this page somewhere!
