MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye MOT
I have been told by a garage that to obtain an MOT on my neraly rebuilt Frogeye I will have to change the front indicator/sidelight glass lens fron clear to amber and change the headlights to incorportate the sidelights. Any truth in this statement and has anyone had any difficulty in getting an MOT with the original set up? Thanks Peter |

Original setup must pass MOT. A |

Peter, They are wrong. It's the same with seatbelts. Your car was never built with them so they aren't neccessary for an MOT. Try to find a classic friendly MOT station. |

Agreed Gary, so many MOT testers do not know the rules in relation to older cars (IE which parts of the Test are relevant for what year) exhaust emissions/ seat belts etc. Go to a proper old school garage ideally with a older tester, not some youth who's never looked at anything older than a Mondeo.. |

If its manufactured pre 1965 then clear front indicators are legal , and also red rear indicators. If its made later than that, maybe a later sprite with a frogeye front end or an IOW frogeye then you should have yellow front indicators , but i know some people have got away with it . Roy |

R McKnight, why a IoW Frog if it was sold as a restoration it takes the ID of the doner car, just like a Heritage shelled car. A shell is only a spare part:) |

Peter. I would suggest that you officially challenge the MOT station in question. Involve VOSA and I'll bet they will soon think again about clear lenses and sidelight positions.... I've NEVER heard of anything SO stupid in all my life.... (Well I have.... Genuine Ex Works Cooper S' had a slightly different sidelight/indicator arrangement to the std car, that can be an MOT question mark....) Mark. |

I'd ask them to show you where in the book it says that (they have to have a book with the stuff in it) on that page should be the reasons for exemptions (one of which will be age related) A picture of the original spec might help you - do you have a haynes restoration manual or any other literature? |

Yes i stand corrected , yes an IOW sprite is a a reshell . But some frogeye replicas if built on a post 65 car would have to comply . |

Thanks for the advice - I think I have found the right sort of garage to carry out the MOT so iy will be clear indicators |
