MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye seatbelts
I don't want to start a long debate about whether seatbelts are a good or bad idea in an open top car like a sprite. I am interested in whether there are any issues about the style of belt that can be fitted, or issues like mounting brackets. My preference is for intertia belts, but I don't know which might be suitable. Help and suggestions welcome. ************ Also is it worth buying an owner's handbook for a Frogeye? (Me? Wind people up? Just an innocent question!) |

Also is it worth buying an owner's handbook for a Frogeye? (Me? Wind people up? Just an innocent question!) I doulbt nigel would agree thats a good idea, but sure why not, it would be a good night read. Prop |

As to the belts... im a fan of inertia, but getting them set up to be funtional is a bear What about a 3 point or 5 point harness, there fairly inexpensive on ebay... but they may just be for show over function at those prices :-( Prop |

Graeme Wasn't it exhilerating as I wellied the Sebring down the Kentish lanes or was your silence sheer fear. I have known some truly petrified on a hot pursuit! Seat belts? Live life on the edge. Statics were retro fit almost in period or a harness can be fitted if a cross brace is used. Alan |

Alan: Mrs is complaining! She had to wash my underwear three times this afternoon in order to get it "servicable" again. Hope you can get the seat dry again. |

Graeme Depending on the year of your car, there may be mounting points - Terry Horler's book has the info on intro dates. See mounting info for optional seat belts for the Frogeye in the workshop manual: http://gerardsgarage.com/Garage/Tech/SeatBeltWS.htm Unfortunately aftermarket Securon belts now available do not have the correct twin bolt fitting for the top seatbelt mounts on top of the rear wheel arch (twin bolt until 1964? And then a different single mount slightly different position on wheel arch: http://www.mg-cars.net/mg-midget-sprite-technical-bbs/roll-bar-fitting-problem-2013021018154420228.htm ). I am fitting belts to a Mk2 Sprite and will have to make up a plate for the twin bolts to single bolt Secron fitting. Also need to weld in captive plates to sill (missing) and transmission tunnel. Have you looked at this company? "QUICKFIT SAFETY BELT SERVICES, established by Bill Quick in the early 1960’s have been fitting seat belts into cars and commercial vehicles for nearly 50 years and is "The expert" in this field." http://www.quickfitsbs.com/about_us.php On another page: "Seat belt pricing starts from £35 for modern static belts, £65 for period static seat belts, £53.50 for modern inertia belts and £83.50 for period inertia seat belts." (Prices exclude VAT, P&P and fitting.) |

Jonathan: I did see that site in my google search. I have gone for the Securon inertias and as Mike points out, I'm am also aware of the two bolt/one bolt attachment. I understand my car (which is yet to be delivered) has had belts previously fitted but were removed by a po inorder to get thro an mot as they were frayed and therefore a cause for failure. Hopefully I can use the same attachments. I ordered belts from Rimmers as they have a "15%" off Triumph parts at the moment. As the Triumph belt is the same as the Sprite one it was a no-brainer. That more than paid the delivery cost. |
