MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye tyre sizes
Hi . I am thinking of putting on a set of 5x13 minilite replica wheels on my frogeye and wondered about tyre sizes . Its on 4x13 original steels with 155/70/13 tyres , and they look lost in the wheel arch ..Its got a 1275 engine and its a bit undergeared so i thought of 165/13 or 175/70/13 . Will they clear the arches?..Any help would be great , dont want to buy tyres and then find they rub.. What is everybody else running ? ..Thanks Roy |

Before everyne jumps in and says check the archives, I'll mention that I have 175's on my 5.5 inch wheels but it depends on the offset how they look in the arches. I don't have any clearance problems. |

Yes, you can put any of those on and if you've chosen a wheel with the correct offset there will be no problems. I've used 175's 185's and 205 section on a 5 1/2J and 6J X 13 rims, and currently run 5 1/2J X 14 with 185 Yokohamas on the Frogeye. I've never had rubbing issues - I have however put a spacer on the steering arms and included a short tube to limit rack movement. The gearing won't get much changed with any of these wheels and tyres as increases in rolling circumferance is really limited by the wheel arch opening - but you play with the options here: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html You'll need a change of diff ratio and/or a 5 speed for that. If the engine is strong enough you could contemplate a 3.5/1 ratio which was available from Autogear UK, however they seem to have since disappeared. |

Sorry, I'm an idiot. They are 165/70 Avon CR322's |

Its got a 5speed box , but i think standard diff ratio and it pulls into max revs in 5th , so before i change diff i thought go up a bit on tyre size .165/80/13 or 175.70.13 .. If your running 14" wheels who supplies them ?..Also all the replica wheels are 5x13 , who does a 5 and half by 13 . want a period looking wheel . any ideas |

Roy, talk to Midland Wheels - they can supply pretty well any size / width / offset / PCD you care to think of. http://www.midlandwheels.com/ |

The 14" wheels on the Frogeye came from Bull Motif near Evesham. They seem to be the cheapest around at £436 which includes VAT and free delivery. Oddly they source from Midland Wheels who'll charge £40 more for the same product. But I have to say Midland wheels are very good. If you just want 5 1/2J X 13 and 185's I have some in the classified section. |

fp - the MWS website quotes me £318 incl VAT & delivery for the 14 x 5.5. |

All the quotes included a set of 185/60 Yokohamas. |
