MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front brake upgrade

I read here before about upgrading front brakes by using MGB calipers and Sp*tf*re discs. I seem to remember that the discs had to be modified. What does that entail? Has anyone tried Jensen Healey discs as they have the same PCD as the Spridget.
I did try searching the archive but got nowhere. Thanks in advance, Neil

I would be interested in this also. However I need them to fit wire wheels and I don't think there is enough room.

Gents,
i've done the mod & was going to offer a basic kit of parts for my Eaton fund, as there is a bit of machining involved for the spacers & discs, but i'm off to India for a few months so won't be around to do this.
Is there anyone who would want to take this on or shall i just publish my diagrams?
Cheers
Brad

And this time with a picture!

Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

Brad, I'm also thinking of doing this for my k-midget and have the calipers already, I would be interested in the pics, or details of how much you'd charge for the parts?

You can email me direct on the above address if thats easier,

Thanks

I had a word with my local machinist, spacers would be about 40.00-ish, but thats in Aberdeen where things are expensive, with a batch run & a cheaper location that could change. Also theres the steering arm spacers (which are easy) & machining the discs which isn't.
Perhaps Bill or my old chum Shaun, would like to take this on?
If there is a lot of interest i could buy a billet of ali & see how many spacers i could get, but like i said before, i'm away to India for a bit so be patient!
cheers

Hi Brad I can get engineering and machining work done very easily and cheaply. If you will email me the requirements I can get it priced up and see who wants a kit machining up.

I think I could swing the required membership of the Boston and district pidgeon fanciers association which should keep costs down! LOL

Id be interested in the conversion too. I have both a decent lathe and milling machine at home so machining I'd want to do myself.
D Tetley

Bob,
as most people on here are fairly apt & to keep costs down, for a DIY kit i was going to include the disc spacers without the holes drilled, metal for the steering arm spacer, the required HT bolts & nuts, new tab washers & new hose copper washers & possibly a 3/8 unf tap.

People can source there own calipers (32.50 plus vat) & dics (mine were 40.00 for grooved & cross drilled).

Drilling & tapping holes is easy, but time consuming for a machine shop. For a DIY job the discs can be home ground, but i did mine on the lathe.

I would guess that 10 people or so would be required to make buying a billet of ali worthwhile.

Anybody interested in Bob's offer?
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

Brad, this sounds good, I've already sourced callipers and discs (same as yours) following reading previous threads, so am interested in the "kit of parts) ie spacers etc. As you say, drilling and tapping holes is no problem, and I'd guess that most people on here and interested in the conversion would be able to do this.

So put me down as 1 person interested in a set.

I'm sure that many more will follow on!

I'll let the thread run for a bit then & see who wants, then i'll probably hand it over to Bob to manange if he's ok with that.
Don't forget my Eaton charity fund has exacly zero in it at the moment!
cheers

Brad,

Have you shopped around for the aluminium prices?. I know from my local suppliers that the prices vary quite considerably. Some have high part length rates and no delivery charge, others have lower part length rates and a delivery charge. This mainly effects parts length pricing, lengths normally being 3m to 4m in length depending on the mill source and it's cheaper to buy by the length. In your case though it looked like the aluminium spacers were about 2" long and 4" OD so 10 off sets would be about 41" (1.05m) long so best part length price + delivery would be good.
David Billington

I would be interested. I have access to a lathe and a milling machine.

Im certianly intrested, I have to do it anyway, So IF the price is with in reason, and you dont mind shipping to the usa....put me on the list as a possiable....just give me a ball park price and how much extra work would be needed...but yes Id perfer to get my own calipers and disk as well.

thanks

The conversion to MGB calipers will not work with wire wheels?
Ron Koenig

Brad me old mucker, you have seperate mail!!!

Brad,

Did you machine your apacers from solid bar or tube. If bar then you might want to check with your materials supplier about thick walled Al tube as it'll save a lot on material and machining time if you can get something near your finished size. I bought some 5"OD x 1" wall Al a few years ago and it was a lot cheaper then buying solid.
David Billington

David,
it was from a solid bar, it was free so i used it. I'll check on the tubing sizes, could be the way to go.

I'd appreciate it if you could put me down for a set of spacers too.

This conversion DOES work with wire wheels and I believe my car was the first in the UK to use this conversion.

I suppose you all realise you can buy the kit off the shelf from Peter May?
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Hi Daniel,
like me most people are on a budget, i would have bought a PM kit but didn't have the money.
I have had a lot of mail from people interested in the conversion, but like me without the spare funds to buy a complete kit, so why not do a run of spacers for them.
cheers

Everyone

As Brad mentioned earlier he is off to India and has passed me details of what needs to be done,

Brad has passed me the emails that he has recieved from you all and as I put the info together and what people are after I will be in touch so that we can get this moving forward.

As he mentions this is very much a budget conversion and one that I will be doing on my very own car so any help.

I have included my email address in case any one wants to get in touch directly.

Shaun
Shaun

I didn't think Peter's kit was that expensive. Obviously if you include new discs, calipers etc the cost is higher.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

PM kit, if it's what they call Type 900 kit, is £340 and it's not clear what that includes. If exch calipers, new discs and pads are about 100 (from Welsh MG centre) then gawd knows what the other 240 is for?
David Smith

Shaun I think there are a number of us interested so we just need to know what we get and how much is the cost.
