MG Midget and Sprite Technical - front brakes binding

Dear All,

it has been a while since i asked for help, but would be grateful if you could do so once again.

I have replaced most of the brake components in my midget 1500 and after road testing the front brakes press on (pedal rock hard) after about 5 minutes of operation, and will ease back off again after i release the pressure from the bolt/pipe on the master cylinder, i add this to relieve the idea that it might be a brake hose issue.

As i have replaced the seal kit i am thinking that either i have not done something correctly on either the re-charging of the system, back first then front, or messed up the replacement of the seals.

also note worth twice i have had to back fill the front systen as it did not push fluid (air lock?) i am thinking of trying opening both back and front to get full travel on the pedal in case something is not beding..any other ideas or should i get a new master and be done with it??

just completed the conversion to J type O/d and detailed the engine bay evewn if i say so myself car looks great and can't wait to get it on the road to try but cant until i can get a bit of speed up

I would buy a good quality replacement M/C. No doubt.

Hi Doug.

Sounds to me if you have had it all apart that when you put the mastercylinder back in the pedal box, you adjusted the pushrod too tight. i.e no play. This has the effect of not allowing the piston to return enough and blocking the bypass port in the master cylinder. This will cause the pressure to build up and lock the brakes. Try slackening it off a bit.

Alternativly it is not unheard of for very old flexible pipes to collapse and stop the fluid return with the same effect.

Hi,

Had this myself once and it was a faulty master cylinder.

Is yours a late car with the dual circuit set up? ie has the brake warning light on the console?

If it was a collapsing flexi hose it would only affect one side surely?

Gday DF when you rebuilt the M/C did you put the "trap valves" (102 in image) in the correct way???? These are fitted spring end "in" inside the brake line "adaptors" (104 in image) HTH
