MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front rotors
so it's advise time again please. Posted a thread earlier about directionals and got right on advise. Now I need some on rotors. Mechanic says I need new ones. Checked Moss motors and they have "Brembro" rotors or aftermarket ones for much less. Not real familier with aftermarket so opinions please! this MG midget 1977 1500 will be my grandsons when I can no longer drive it so it seems to me it should be original over aftermarket. HELP |

Go for the brand disk and mintex 1144 pads for road use. no no-name parts on my brakes.... |

Christian, I'd go for the name brand rotors. The manufacturer has put their name on them and therefore their reputation. Better to use on them as opposed to no-name parts. |

I used the Brembo standard rotors and EBC Greenstuff pads and they worked fine. Well worth the extra in my opinion for the Brembo rotors to help prevent warpage and increase rotor life. |

I agree Brembo are a good option. But when I replaced my discs, I used the cheapo's, and have had no trouble at all. Years of braking with no trouble. It's like the difference between Tesco's own value baked beans and Heinz. Taste the same to me and cost way less. I don't buy brands just for the sake of it. Of course if there was any real difference in the discs, like quality of steel, thickness etc, then I would go the branded route. But I can't see Moss selling something that is going to fail and get you killed. Not worth their reputation or the likelyhood of getting a major law suit filed against them for selling unsafe items. Depends on how much the price difference is too. |

Brembo are good, but we have have had just as good results from the cheaper ones, including on track days and spiritied driving on mountain passes. |

I must admit i only had problems with repro disks on other cars than the midget. But it has made me never want to skimp on brake parts. And as for moss not selling crap because they have a name to uphold......you must be kidding |

let's complicate things :) larger retail outlets will switch their suppliers to achieve higher profits and/or lower sale prices so the parts they supplied at any given time could be from a different supplier from the past or future so potentially the quality could vary up and down over time potentially the ones they supply today could be better than those supplied 20k+ miles ago - or not as good a report from a recent purchaser from the same batch of parts is required but I think with standard Spridget front brakes you're probably better concentrating on the pads and I give a thumbs up for Mintex 1144 pads which I have on humble make front brake disks |

Let me add a little more to this story as some of your comments have made me think, the mechanic has told me that the pads are fine but that the rotors are undersized and need to be replaced, so i haven't thought about pads. Does this make sense to have to replace just rotors? |

I have had the Brembo rotors on for 6 years. We drilled them before fitting them, and anyone who remotely knows me will atest to them not having an easy time. I have been through a set of greenstuff (absolutely crap) pads, and I am on my second set of mintex 1144's. Still no problems. |

in answer to your second question Christian, I would replace the pads when I install a new rotor My reason is just to make sure that the old, worn pads don't engrave their worn shape into my new rotors. Norm |

Are you sure the rotors are under size? A lot of modern mechanics are not familiair with the tiny dimensions used on the midget. But if you fit new rotors the you also fit new pads |

def fit new pads with new discs, unless the old pads are almost new. You can easily surface the old pads if they are not badlt scored. I've done this before. As for MOSS selling crap, I agree some of it is crap. But I still doubt that they would sell a brake disc they know to be substandard safety wise. On the other hand, with their level of 3rd party liability insurance, maybe they would? Aren't there any official standards such as ISO numbers that discs have to meet? |

Thanks for the advise. This mechanic has worked on foriegn cars for a while so I trust him. As for Moss, I am actually ordering it through LBC using Moss part # since theyr'e advertized on this site and give a discount over Moss. I'm going to order the Brembo rotors. as only one peson seemed to not like them. Again Thanks for all your help. Also on my post about directionals not flashing, thanks to all and the guy that told possibly low battery gets the prize! |
