MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front wheel bearings
Having replaced the front wheel bearings 11 months ago and having gone no more than 1000 miles I find that I'm geting rumbling from the same wheel again. Looks like I need to replace again. I got the first replacement from and mg specialist locally. Does anyone know where to get decent bearings? ('71 1275 Sprite) |

At the moment if it were me I would contact this company and ask them for a: 3MJT17 and a: 34LJT25 These were the original bearings and if replaced by these then you should have no trouble. There are cheaper bearings around but these will always be a problem |

Don't know if it is to difficult, but there is a guy in Copenhagen, Denmark, who supplies closed bearings. I had the same problem with my race midget, but after I got his bearings I've had no problems. It is this guy: http://www.mgparts.dk/ Ole |

Er, Bob, which company would that be then!? |

This one. LOL Sorry http://www.ransomeandmarles.co.uk/references.html |

in my opinion the trustside for the inner large bearing should be facing the oil seal and trustside for the small bearing should face towards the nut. on a proper bearing the trust is taken by the higher, thicker side of the outside race. On some bearing I notice only a fatter trust part on the smaller inside race. is there somewhere a sectioned drawing of the Midget hub set up incl correct bearings availble on the internet I wonder ? |
Bas |
It is funny that you should ask for that, Bas, because there is such a site, and it does a pretty good job of explaining how the bearings work in a Midget hub (and why one should not install the bearings with the thrust side facing the wrong way, or leave the spacer out): http://smithtr6.com/bearings.htm Norm |

ahh thnx Norm, been well investigated but clearly the trustfaces should be facing the other way then just described by me above |
Bas |
http://smithtr6.com/bearings.htm Are you actually all considering this radius issue mentioned in the above website ? |
Bas |
yup, in fact, that radius is the reason why we are advocating to use the OEM ("RHP") bearings, instead of the "equivalent" NSK or Timken ones that have too sharp of a radius there. This discrepancy is very hard to tell during assembly because you can't "see" it (the bearing must be pressed on/off to do a trial fit), and a corner radius can be hard for someone without a set of radius gauges to measure even if they knew to check for it. I never imagined what this would come to when I first noticed the space behind a bearing I had placed on the stub axle now more than a year ago. Norm, I would like to wrap up that web page. I wonder if you might write something about the pre-load for the bearings and send it to me? I think you are better informed about that. I will get some other things together and get this done, before I forget things. Old age you know. |

Tom, I'll send you an email with some suggestions I was thinking about for you! ":oD Norm"tech support" Kerr |

Norm, I see your e-mails. Got home from a days drive and the heat has pretty much worn me out. I will read them tomorrow. BTW - Thanks |
