MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front wheel bearings- Thrust side?
Could someone help please? My manual says place the outer bearing into the hub with the face marked 'thrust'entering first. Press the inner bearing into place again with the face marked 'thrust' towards the distance piece. Which side is the 'thrust' side? I have writing on one side of each bearing which consists of the manufacturers name and a number. 'Thrust' isn't written anywhere. The two photos show the two sides of each bearing. Thanks in anticipation. |

Here's the photo of the other side of the bearings.

The direction of thrust is the one where the bearing won't fall apart - so there must be a face on the inner which pushed against the race, and a face on the outside to counter this. So look at the outers: where these is a distinct flange, this should go against the housing shoulder. HTMS A |

Pretty much as Anthony says, looks to me like the thrust side is the one with the writting on. |

Neil, the bearsings are installed with the sides in picture 1 facing the centre of the hub, i.e up against the flanges machined into the hub. Mike |

It really worries me sometimes that people that don't know what they are doing can still work on their cars putting other road users in danger. If you don't know which way round a bearing goes I suggest that maybee for the safety of everyone you should have the job done by a pro. Willy |

Take it easy. He's only asking to be sure, for heavens sake. |

Hey thanks all. By way of explanation I replaced a bearing in a front wheel bearing. After 2000 miles it is kaput. I have had a replacement sent free of charge by the supplier. I was just checking that I had fitted it correctly first time round. I had. As for the helpful Mr Revit from Tasmania thank you for your helpful comment. Thankfully this BBS doesn't have too many contributions from people like yourself. I wish I knew it all like you obviously do. |

In 1969 when I bought my first midget I knew naff-all about cars and how they worked and how they went together. And even less about general engineerng theory and practise. What little I've learned since, I've learned by watching, reading, listening and asking, and can now build my own race car which doesn't break or fall apart. I STILL have to stop and think and work it out when faced with an unmarked bearing. Willy, you are out of order; please ponder upon it. |

The only people to worry about are the ones who aren't sure but DON'T ask. That's what is great about the BBS, the opportunity to look before you leap. |

Neil A bit heavy I guess - My apologies if I offended you that was not my intention at all _ bad day In my work i see a lot of shonky stuff that has ended in disaster. I read your thread at a time that wasn't good. Again my apologies if I offended you Willy David Really I don't think I'm out of order at all and I certainly don't profess to 'know it all' I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone Saftey first and foremost Only trying to help Pondered Willy |

Thanks Neil - Willy As the guys have said above the wider flanges on the outer shells of the bearings -picture one- should face each other(face towards the centre of the hub) Cheers Willy |
