MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front wiring loom question
Hi, as well as the HIF44 conversion, I will be undertaking a full wiring loom replacement (lots of tape, scotch locks and the strange ability to start and run the car with no fuses in the box) I ordered the 2 looms (AHA8694 and AHA8421), picked them up yesterday and spent about 3 hours with a diagram and sticky labels identifying the wires and grouping them together, as I've never done anything like this before I'm being methodical! Is it normal for a front loom to end with the horn wires on one strand and 6 wires for the front lights on another (black, blue/red trace, blue/white trace, green/red trace, green/white trace, red)? Is there a seperate loom which will run across the front of the car and connect to the head/side lights and indicators because as it stands at the moment the loom will end roughly at the front splash shield? My front loom (1965 Mk II) splits into 2 as you describe with a seperate bit going to the horn. The nearside headlight and sidelight have a seperate loom which is joined to the main by bullet connections in the area behind the grill and the same is true for the off side lamps. So I think you are missing 2 short add ons for the lamps. Whether you have to make these yourself or they should have come with the loom I don't know. |

WOW, super quick on the responses!!!! Having looked further in the Moss book on the headlights page there is a small mini loom to connect into the bowl (BAU2110?) but it would have to be quite a bit longer for the nearside light as it has to cross the car so I'm a bit dubious if this will sort my probs, I may need to salvage some of the existing loom to make the piece to cross over. Nick, It doesnt look too far out from mine and at the front end is identical, good to see its a normal loom I've been sold. Thanks Mark |

So far as I remember, the light fittings came with their short tails, which was fine for the offside, and the extensions to the nearside came with the loom. |

The loom's lighting wires should go further than the splash shield and should terminate in the centre of the slam panel. The wires from the headlights (BAU2110) and the sidelights will reach there from either side. (I seem to recall about a 4" extension on the LH side for the sidelamp, but I've just had a look and can't see one there. Losing marbles again!) You have to be careful how you arange and secure the wiring so it is clear of the bonnet catch & release. If it doesn't reach, check you have it laid out correctly. If stuck, try this: Start by locating the wires which go to the fuse box. Their junction with the main loom should be 2 - 3" in front of the the loom exits from the firewall. Run it down the footwell top outside of the pedalbox, go across towards the centre just in front of the pedal box and then you should find that the wires to the starter solenoid etc branch off about where it reaces the inside edge of the inner wing. Go straight along the inner wing to the splash panel ... and you should have enough to go through the splash panel & front assembly and then across to the centre of the slam panel There is a separate loom which joins the two horns together. I haven't ever located a part number for it, instead I have made it up by scavenging some wire of the right colour from the old loom. (Purple and purple/black) There are usually enough oil-free sections in it to sufficient yield good qualit wire. To keep it tidy, we use enough length to secure it with the main loom and the first part of LH (nearside) headlamp harness rather than leave it hanging out on its own. There is also a seperate small harness for the dipswtich for the floor mounted variants. |
