MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel gauge testing
Fuel gauge on recent MG 1300 acqusition reads over 1/4 full but ran out on first run! After adding 20 litres, gauge still read the same so as this was one of several electrical gremlins, pulled the dash out which was very challenging. After disconnecting the wire to the sender, the gauge dropped to empty. Can I test the gauge on the bench to ensure it reachs full. Assuming it does, I guess its a case of new sender. |

Dont forget to add that this is for a positive earth car. Im in the same boat...I notice last time my fuel gauge isnt working...im hoping its just a little corrosion on the voltage stablizer contact and not a stuck float in the tank Prop |

Doug, watch out, the new sender units don't have the same resistance at empty as the originals, they read 1/8th full at empty. Or at least mine did (late 1500) |

I have similar - My gauge reads way above empty before the engine dies. ideas as to root cause Gauge is fine, the fuel intake pipe has been damaged in someway, meaning it is sucking from a higher point than normal. Gauge is goosed, sender is goosed, float is goosed. My actions Set trip meter to zero after ever tank fill, understand how far to empty, and keep a wary eye. Always carry a can of fuel in boot! |
