MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel odor on shutdown

Hello all,

Since the good advice is flowing, I'd thought I would put something out here that's been a minor annoyance for some years. After a run of at least 30mins. I get a fuel odor after shutdown. My wife complains about the stinky garage, I've just gotten used to it. After a long drive, especially in hot weather, I keep in in the driveway for about a half hour before tucking it in for the night. Then it's fine. I have no fuel leaks, the trunk area is odor free as well. I have a new weber 2 tv which works fine... car is not running rich , off choke emissions are actually pretty good considering there is no air pump or egr. Fuel lines, etc are all tight. Using STD mechanical fuel pump. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Evaporative loss system?

that was my guess also, but how you fix I dont know.

also try not to park with more then 3/4 tank of fuel, I know if I park with a full tank I get a strong fuel smell.

you could also have a small rust out hole in the fuel tank.

or maybe the fuel sender gasket is worn out and the vapor is escaping thur there

Al -

Have you get that little fuel separator tank in the trunk, on the RH side of the car? The rubber hoses that run to that tank can get old and crack off. I know.

Just a suggestion; you didn't mention what model of midget you have. This may just apply to the 1500.

I think I found it. Btw, it's a 1500. A few years ago I drilled a small hole in the plenum under the carb. This was the original source for mt now famous adjustable pcv system to replace the one from the pre Weber manifold (lots of old posts on this). I had since moved the source elsewhere and plugged said hole. Since I couldn't see it, I basically forgot it was there. In searching for the source of the smell, I found that the plug was a little loose. When running, vacuum pulls it tight, but on shutoff it moves, thereby creating a place for what's left in the plenum to evaporate out, hence the smell. A reseal seems to have done the trick... chalk another one up in my very large stupid column.
Cheers
