MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Pump Recommendations
I have a loss of fuel issue on my 71 midget. It will sputter then die because of no fuel. On the first event, I disconnected the fuel line upstream of the pressure regulator and the fuel filter and was getting no fuel despite hearing the Carter fuel pump running. A wise person told me to grab the roll bar and rock the car...it started. Thinking it was a clogged screen in the tank, I installed a new tank. Happened again. This time I blew backwards through the line then it began pumping. I checked the rubber fuel lines on each side of the pump, thinking the inner ply was collapsing, but looked fine. My next step is to change the pump, even though it sounds normal. So...can someone recommended a pump and where to purchase....and if you have any thoughts as to the source of the problem, my ears are open. By the way, I have a Weber 32/36 DVG Ken |

don't know why you have a Carter pump and a pressure regulator but if it were me I would junk them both and revert to the standard SU pump or its modern (electronic innards) equivalent. Have you replaced the fuel cap recently? (thinking maybe it's non-vented). |

The Carter and regulator were on the car when I bought it 15 years ago, both have performed well over 25k miles. Isn't the tank vented through the vapor absorption canister? I removed the canister years ago and ran the vent straight to the vent connection in the trunk. Since the problem occurred, I disconnected it from the tank and blew through it to ensure it was clear. The fuel cap has been on the cars 10 yrs. and doesn't appeared to be a vented cap. |

I think your on the yellow brick road... I.suspect it is the fuel pump, its had a long life There are plenty of pusher pumps out there in varing price ranges... you want a low pressure, 1.5 to 3 psi ideally... all the pump does is get the fuel to the float chambers, the engie takes over from there and draws it the rest of the way to the flame Prop |
