MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Sender Types

Hi everyone,

I've got major problems with my fuel gauge system; I've replaced the wiring and earths (after a...slight car fire...) and bench tested the gauge, which works.

I think the fuel sender is the problem; it's the earlier one of the 'late' type variants (held down by 6 or so screws). I've heard the later two types (with some kind of locking ring???) are more reliable and give a better seal.

a) is that true? and
b) do I need a different type of tank?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Josh

Oh - thanks for all your help on my last problem; I ended up finding a copy of Daniel's book in the states on eBay. $50 later and it's making it's way to me! Cheers guys.

those petrol fumes must be getting to you

two different types of petrol tank, one with screws other with bayonet type locking ring - have a look at the usual suspects parts drawings

I'd guess you'd be best also to marry the correct sender to the correct gauge for accurate readings

as you don't say which model this is for it maybe you have a later car with an earlier tank and sender or even an earlier car with a later tank and sender

what's happened to your gangly mate, he not been here insulting me for ages, has he given up on his midget submarine :)

You'll have to match the sender to the gauge.
Early systems are 12V and later 10V

If when you turn the ignition on your gauge springs into life its probably 12V whereas if it drags itself into life its probably 10V. The 10V systems have a stabiliser / regulator either under the bonnet on the bulkhead or up under the dashboard. The stabiliser can go wrong. Some ones are solid state.

The early tank senders can have earthing problems and It can be beneficial to add an earth wire from tank sender to the bodywork,
