MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fule guage

hi i have a 68 midget the gauge is reading half full whan tank is full to the top any ideas thanks richard

It's likely that the float has become porous, and is part-full of petrol - hence it's not floating on top of the petrol, giving a low reading.

I have an idea that it is possible to install the sender unit in the tank the wrong way round, such that the bent wire that the float attaches to comes up against the underside of the tank top and prevents a full reading. Has it always been like this? Does it also read half full when it is really half full?

What happens when the fuel level falls? My petrol gauge reads in reverse (half full when tank is full and gradually moves to full as petrol is used. I believe that there is a mismatch between my sender unit and my gauge. Late sender units work in reverse to early ones. I've never been able to figure out how to match up qauge and sender so I live with it and keep a can of fuel in the boot. Chris

probably porous will have to strip when have time can you just get replacement float?
