MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Full respray advice

Hi there everyone,

I am about ready to start the full respray of my midget. It has been a long time working to smooth the body out up until now but I am just looking for a bit of guidance as to how to approach it. Do I take off all the outer panels (doors, boot, bonnet, wings) and spray them separately so I can get a good finish on all under parts as well or should I have everything on the car and spray it together and then come back to the bits underneath...?

Anyone with any experience of a full respray on a midget here...? If you have any general tips as well please let me know.

A paint shop would remove the wings and doors, bonnet and boot - my paint shop did, and delivered the car back to me with these panels loosely fitted with padding to protect them. By having the panels off you can then paint the edges properly. But you have to be aware that refitting them then becomes fraught with the danger of damaging your beautiful paint. It's up to you. If you decide to dismantle, fit the panels properly before you paint, then remove them, so if there's any fettling to do, you do it before the paint goes on.

You asked this question 2 weeks ago and got a lot of sound advice. All I can add is that you watch the local weather forecast online noting humidity and temperature and keep a barometer by the car. If you paint above 70% humidity you'll almost certainly guarantee blooming - or micro blistering at a later date,regardless of the thinners used. You should choose a day with 55% humidity or below - which usually happens after 2pm at this time of year, together with 15 degrees C or above temperature.

i took the boot, doors and bonnet off when i did my Midget. the advantage being that a panel sitting on a workmate for example is likely to give you less problems when it comes to runs. . .its not a complete failsafe, but if your like me you will use all the advantages you can. I left the wings on, as unless you have lots of space available (remembering that you will not want to move them when you have just sprayed them)

As has been said, you do then have to be careful when re fitting, but this 'careful approach' by its nature slows you down and i feel means you may take extra care with the alignment !

weather watching is good advice, i am currently doing a BGT and as such am praying to the sun gods. . .suggest you do the same !
