MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Furflex Door Seal help

I am replacing the old, tired and worn out seals around the door openings in my 1500 midget.
I ordered and received a 10' piece of 'Furflex' door seal from Vic Brit, item #9-5020.
Does anyone know how these install?
Am I missing clips? Do they need clips?

The old seals were the push on type, very easy on and off.

Can you post a pic of what you got, Wrong parts shipped are extremely common with VB...and they keep shipping the same thing back several times when trying to correct the problem

It should have a grove section on the otherside of the rubber section that slips onto the body edge for the door opening

Here is a tip, for when you get the corrct furlex seal, take the seal to the local hardware store and get some cotten road that fits without force inside the hollow rubber tube seal and string it thur then install, it makes a tighter door seal and the rubber seal last alot longer just use a litttle black silicon chaulk to seeal up the 2 ends

Prop, the problem with the "groove section on the other side of the rubber"...is that it's stiched together. If I try to seperate it to open the groove, the fur piece will come apart from the rubber seal.

It's a 3 piece construction. The fuzzy fur section, a metal channel made up of individual crimped pieces that runs the length of the seal and of course, the rubber part.
It's hard to see the metal section in the pics.
The groove along the outside of the rubber is not deep enough to press on to the door opening.

Beats the hell at of me...

I guess I will call Vic Brit, but they usually are not much help when it comes to technical help....

Im not sure what that is, it looks like a duraflex, but not really, Ill have a look at mine and and take some photos for you tomarrow.

Well, that's just peculiar. It doesn't look like the seals on my car, which I replaced a number of years ago.

By the way, I've had very good luck with parts from VicBrit.

Hey gryf,

It almost looks like its been made wrong, like the furry stuff was installed to the seal backwards,

when was the last time you dealt with vicbrit....about 18 months for me, and the last items where bad dealing, maybe (hopefully)they fixed there problems scence then.

Not just a problem on your side of the pond - Moss sell material that looks the same as yours and i could not use it - stiched together and falls apart when you try and fit it.

I eventually obtained the alternative one they sell which is a black plastic type instead of the furry stuff - it still has the rubber bulb seals etc and it fitted with no problems - did not need any clips either.

The plastic type (with the steel core) looks more original than the furry type also.

I had a similar problem with the same material. Was able to "coax" it on but it did not stay that way. I need to order the alternative "push-On" style.

Those clips = NOT fun.

If you go to the Woolies website and look at aperture seals http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk your door seal is the plush snappon type. I believe these furflex seals were usually reserved for Jags and Astons - usually we were down spec'd to the woven snappon and rubber type. But the method of fitting is the same. You have to carefully open out the metal u shaped crimped section about 2mm or 3mm wide along the whole length. It's a right fiddle as it can distort and fall apart easily but a long bladed kitchen knife will do it. Open it just enough so it can push onto the door opening. Then you need to get about 40 spring retaining clips - these hammer on about every 3" all around the flange and the seal goes on top of these. Use a big rubber mallet on the door seal and knock it down progressively - you only get one go, once it's on it won't come off.

Thanx folks for the comments.
I talked to someone at Victoria British today who did provide some installation tips based on comments from "the guys in the warehouse". They reiterated that this type of seal was a bit of a bear to install and the plastic type was much easier to situate and required way less curse words to boot.
I took their advice and returned this one for exchange and ordered the plastic type.
(wouldn't wanna be mistook for a Jag or Aston anyways).

For the record... their installation instructions were very similar to yours Mr Pollock, except no mention of the spring retaining clips.

Pity tho, I do hate to give up on things like these...always some small bit of satisfaction gained when you finally figure something out... even as trivial as it is.
Not to worry, I guess...they'll be another one lurking around the corner soon enough.
