MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gas Tank Rust
My fuel is showing (clogging) rust in the fuel filter. I removed the gas tank and it is VERY solid with the exception of some surface rust in the tank. It also does not leak. Is there a home remedy? In other words, is there something I can pick up at a local auto parts store to "seal" the tank? Thanks. JAM |

JAM, there is stuff available but I'm not sure where one would find it. Pep Boys, Auto Zone or similar type of shop perhaps? I had a fuel tank in a similar condition and I took it to a rad shop and they steamed it clean and sealed the inside of the tank and it cost me about $100.00. |

I have split a tank apart in the past and the pickup is not accessible. Cleaning out the rust is OK but I wouldn't put a sealer in it for fear of filling the holes of the pickup tube. Has anyone used a sealer with out problems? |

Ive never done the sealer stuff...Instead I got a tank off ebay several years ago when they where as common as spark plugs, and almost as cheap. Prop |

I tried the 3 M tank sealer. Although I cleaned the inside before sealing it was no success. It clogged the filter and did not seal so well. A new galvanised petrol tank is 80 pounds (AH spares). Flip |

Google Bill Hirsch he distributes/sells a cleaner and a coating for fuel tanks. Short answer...lot of work. Get a new tank... Google Spectra. |
