MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gaskets or not? Type 9 into a 1500

I am fitting a type 9 gearbox into my midget 1500 this summer.
I have had an adapter plate made which is the usual method between my type 9 box and the standard 1500 bell-housing. All assembles OK, but I have a simple question and would like some advice.... should I make gaskets to fit either side of the plate, ie between gearbox and adapter, and between adapter and bellhousing. I know the original 1500 gearbox has a gasket to the bellhousing but my new arrangement does not need any oil sealing.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Steve

I have a Type 9 in my 1500, a super mod, just spend out on a recon box, the £300 (Gloucseter road gearboxes) for a tight change and a 12000 mile warranty is well worth it!

As to the gaskets, one is required between the gearbox and adaptor plate, but shouldn't be necessary between adaptor plate and bellhousing.

Hope this helps

Although I'm not sure of the arrangement for your adapter Steve, usually the adapter plate has a hole running rite through for the gear selector shaft to run forwards when selecting 1st and 3rd. The hole goes right through the plate and is open to gearbox casing. For that reason you do need gaskets on both sides of the adapter or you will lose oil over time. How do I know? Because I didn't fit one at first, thinking it was not open to oil. I leaked gbox oil and killed a type 9.

Thanks for advice, I've made 2 gaskets one either side. For info my conversion is a home made afair as per wizarden & bob tooke web sites. Plus I measured up my own adapter plate. At present engine & new box dropped back into car and I'm just making my support plate. Plus I'm seeking further advice from this superb community.

Please see my next thread on speedo cables for type 9.

Thanks for help once again.
