MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gear Box Mounts - Urgent Advice Needed
Following my policy of - if it's difficult to get at replace everything you can at the same time - I have bought some new rubber gear box mounts. The engine and gear box are swinging from the hoist but I am not certain on which way round the rubbers go. It is possible to rotate them on the single screw that fits into the mounting bracket by 180 degrees. In one position the tops of the rubber backing plates are about level with the mounting bracket, in the other they are about 10mm above it. I am refitting the engine myself, hopefully tomorrow, and don't want to have to lift it out again if I find the tunnel securing bolts don't line up. Which is the correct orientation? Also my Sprite is a 1275 so I assume there is no bottom mounting rubber.
The mounting bracket is wedged shaped if viewed from above so I assume it fits with the smaller side to the rear. Thanks for the anticipated advice. Jan T |

Jan There are 3 rubber mountings, 2 either side and one at the bottom. I usually go with the mountings flush at the top |

Thanks bob and especially Bill - the link was really useful. I removed the carrier and mounts whilst rebuilding the gear box and then unscrewed the rubbers before noting how they fitted. The link shows the rubbers flush with the top as Bill suggests. There was no bottom mount fitted in my car and it performed perfectly. I don't know if there should be one in a 1275 and I really want to get the engine back in tomorrow so I am not going to fit one. Jan T |

Jan All the A series cars have the third mounting. Its called a steady block according to Moss, It is a small rubber block and I guess it may help reduce gearbox movement. They usually come out in a sorry state due to oil getting on them so I don't know how effective it really is. I guess if yours is ok without it then fine. |
