MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gearbox Mount Shim -1971 car
The parts diagram shows a shim on the RH gearbox mount (‘71 1275) on the top of the rear bracket. I am just about to put mine back in, but there was no shim there when took it out. Any views on if it is required or not? In its favour is the fact that the plate on the top of my RH mount is no longer bonded to the rubber - might it be due to a lack of a shim? On the up-side the detached plate makes an excellent shim! Mike |

I've never fitted nor seen one fitted to any midget/Sprite that I have seen but maybe the shim is to ensure the rubber mounts are normally (at rest) in compression? This could be one explanation for the sheared rubber but I think the more likely explanation is crap modern parts. Rob |

I can't remember if the ribcase I put in the Frogeye had a spacer. Maybe they're to allow for tolerance I.e. you want the rubber parts of the mount to be snug against the g/box. |

Seen plenty of shims on the ones I've taken apart. Yes it's to space out to the side of the tunnel. If you omit it you may see the tunnel being pressed inwards as you tighten the two side retaining setscrews. |

By a strange co-incidence this appeared on eBay this morning complete with 2 shims, though they look like sheared off mount plates. Rob |

It's so long since I converted to T9, I've forgotten if there was or wasn't a shim on mine. Now it's buging me, so I'll have to look in my loft at the box and mount. 😃 |
