MG Midget and Sprite Technical - got some different springs

Well, I decided to try the lowest leaf springs that Moss sells (and use lowering blocks if needed). Moss gave me my money back for the previous ones that I installed last July (I showed them pictures of why I don't like them and they agreed).

And you think these will be better? ;-)

Best of luck, and keep us posted,

I would drive on the Moss springs for a month or so and then check ride height. I have found that they do deflect rather quickly. If it is still to high, then the lowering blocks can be used until the car is sitting too low.

the previous ones I drove on since July but there was no fixing the fact that the two springs were not matched (poor quality control). I was more concerned with the fact that they were not the same than the fact that the height was not where I want it.

the new moss springs were hand selected from the warehouse this time by someone who understands that you should select two that are well matched.
Also, this time I am using their lowest model. I have some lowering blocks ready to use too if I need it.
My first priority is to get the car at the same height on both sides. that was really unacceptable.

Rebecca, are your new ones the reverse eye ones they advertise as 2.5 inches lower?
John Payne

I am now using the ones with reverse eyes. I think that they are advertized as 2 inches lower and the sales person made sure to tell me that this is 2 inches lower than a brand new original spring (not an old warn out original spring).

Anyway, I installed the left one today (was out of time after that). I used a 1 1/4 inch lowering block with it.

I am very happy with the result on this side. Hopefully I will still be happy when I finish the other side later this week. The height is much lower (more than just the height of the lowering block). I would say that right now I have it exactly where I want it.

I will post pics when I am done.

I should mention that I had no heat and was working with the door open (for better light). I was wearing long underwear, snow pants and two pairs of socks. I did not get cold. no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. ;)

neat-o!

I just learned that there is a company making composite springs for MGBs and MGAs.

http://www.mgbmga.com/tech/mgb4%285%29.htm

composite = huge un-sprung mass reduction, and less manufacturing variation between springs

too bad they don't make anything for our midgets

When I was working with GM, back in the mid '80s, I saw the durability testing they were doing for the, then new, Corvette composite rear leaf spring. The composite springs were going to multiple-multiple life without failure (really amazingly increased durability), and when they finally did fail, after 5x or 10x life, they would split lengthwise (less loss of function than a steel spring).
