MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Grey cockpit moulding wanted
Nigel I got your response. I thought in the home of the midget you may have found one. I did buy a black rubber one to get me out of trouble but when I went to put it on I thought it fitted like sh*t so I didn't put it on. It's a lot bigger and bulkier than the orginal grey plastic one. Also a bit too tall. I have to assume the supplier gave me the correct rubber section but if it is I don't know why it's such a big section. I'll just leave it to the very last thing and keep hunting for a grey one. We don't have MG swaps meets and with a lot less Midgets over here less common parts are not so easy to find. e.g. I did an Aus ebay search for MG Midget and under the parts category there are only 88 listings where as in the UK there's 3659. Perhaps a Midget before to long will reach the end of its life and I'll get one. |

Hi Greg, as I put on the other thread I've found the profile and even size of aftermarket seals can vary could be: a) you've been given the wrong type/profile/size of black seal - sorry I can't check at the moment perhaps some one else can b) the grey seal is a diffent shape to the black seal (doubtfull I'd have thought?) c) the end trim may fit end-on to the seal rather than the way you have it or is a different trim you'd probably enjoy and benefit from buying Terry Horler's book allowing for the small errors and the fact the Aus cars varied - Original Sprite & Midget The Restorer’s Guide by Terry Horler – http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1906133336 |

Nigel it's (a) or (b) but don't know which. The orginal plastic moulding is hard plastic about 1/16" thick in a sytmetrical U. It also goes under the end caps. A totally different shape to the rubber which is why I thought I may had had the wrong section. I had the grey moulding but early last year when I was stripping it to get it painted I foolishly threw it out before checking I could get a replacement. I've got Horlers book. I bought it when it first came out. We've actually had this conversation before. :)Mine is the same as the red Aussie MKIII on page 92 and 98, but in blue. Note the grey moulding peaking out under the hood cover. It goes nicely with the grey seatbelts. Haven't got the owners manual though :) |

Greg, I thought it's probably a) I was thinking of the wrong end piece too so yes that even more suggests the trim you have is probably wrong I know exactly what you mean by throwing something out or giving it away only to find out later how difficult or expensive it is to replace as I've done it more than once sorry about repeating myself with the Terry Horler's book I have a poor memory, I'll make the excuse that it's better to repeat than not to have said as the Aus cars are a blend of years and stages of the UK cars can I suggest that your car when brand new had black trime (regardless of hood frame colour) and the grey was added later to conform so to be original you really need the correct profile black trim :) having sorted that, what's this about conflicts in the East . . . |

During the restoration of my 1969 midget I replaced the original grey cockpit moulding with a black moulding from Moss Motors U.S.A. It fit fine except for the holes for the stud fittings. I had to enlarge them slightly for them to fit. The end caps fitted were also new from Moss and fit without difficulty. moulding: 459-855 end cap R/H: 240-560 end cap L/H: 240-565 Keith |

Greg I notice on the wiper thread that you've found one in the UK. I asked someone I know if they had one and he said yes, but he had a customer lined up for it. I was wondering if it was you? |

Dave and Nigel, I had one lined up with a bloke called Richard Woolley about Christmas time which is why I didn't accept your offer Dave. I'd bought stuff from him before so I thought it was sorted then it appeared to fall through. Then to my total surprise he contaced me again a couple of days ago to ask if I still wanted it. I obviously said yes. We'll see what happens. I suspect it may be the same person because there's probably only one person on the planet stuck on having a grey cockpit moulding for a Midget. I suspect you gave him a reminder, if so thanks. |

Yes, a quick prod obviously did the trick! I hope he didn't put the price up, as he thinks there's more demand!! |

>>I hope he didn't put the price up, as he thinks there's more demand!!<< only fair thing to do is to cut it in half and send a piece to each :) |
