MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Grub / Set Screws 7/16-20
Was someone on this BBS looking for grub screws to block off the emissions on a midget head? I have a source and am getting some for my use. I would ship to the UK at cost. |

Someone is selling some 7/16" UNF grub screws on ebay in the UK at the moment but if I wanted some for a blanking plug I would just get a set screw and cut it down, slot it, and Loctite it in place, 7/16" UNF is the standard seat belt attachment thread so readily available in bolt or set screw form. |

I used 7/16-20 Allen Head screws. They fit flush and looked well. Cheers Gary 79 MGB |

IIRC I bought these at a Home Depot. The Home Depot equivalent in the UK is B&Q. Perhaps he should try his luck there. Gary 79 MGB |

You would be lucky to find a unf fastener of any description in a UK diy store. |

Even my local engineering place has a legacy stock and likely when they're gone they're gone. Namrick has a decent selection of hex bolts, set screws, and cap screws in 7/16" UNF. |

I had exactly the same as David, the small business I sometimes go to (it's 20 miles away) that keeps fittings you could buy even just one piece has limited 7/16" stock and doesn't know where to go to restock. Thanks for the link David. |

Easy to buy UNF/UNC fasteners on the web. I bought a selection from 1/4" to 3/4" last year for the Lifeboat which has CAT engines. Nearly everything mounted on the engines use American standard threads. Not posting any links as I can't remember what suppliers I used and anyway it pays to shop around as I did notice huge inconsistencies in prices. For example I needed 4 off 5/8 UNF for alternator mountings but it was cheaper to buy a box of ten than four individual screws. So we have six spare! |

It's the 7/16" that seem harder to get, try finding 1/2" or 3/4" lengths of those, perhaps pozi heads and where you don't have to order £x to avoid or in addition to high P&P cost - I've not looked that hard or for a while but would appreciate a relevant link. |

In the pub ATM Nigel ;-) |

Good man ! I didn't mean the answer immediately. Enjoy your drink(s) but you shouldn't be in a pub that allows the use of phones or devices ;) |

Nigel As the original post was about grubscrews, how's this for a start. http://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/fasteners/threaded-rods/7-16unfx3ft-mild-steel-studding/p/QFT6394070K?utm_campaign=pla+-+&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping-pla&utm_keyword=QFT6394070K&istCompanyId=6aa6787b-063e-4414-802d-129f235df603&istItemId=aqrxrxxtq&istBid=tztx 3 feet of 7/16" UNF studbar for a tenner. Make as many grubs as you like. Or this on the Bay of Evil http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-32-UNF-Steel-Phillips-Pan-Head-Machine-Screws-Length-7-16-10-32-E12-/161437730923?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368 The truth is out there haha. (Back from the pub now. Just starting to cook) ;-) |

Greybeard, The ebay link is for 10-32 UNF screws 7/16" long so not much use in a 7/16" UNF threaded hole. The threaded rod is useful and much the same as my earlier suggestion of cutting up a long set screw to make the plugs. |

Aah b*ll*cks that's right David. In my defence I was only just in from the boozer! Attention deficit! However as an illustration there's plenty of stuff out there. Not hard to find but as Nigel remarked the P&P charges seem to be a bit salty sometimes. (Cooking going well. Chilli con carne with saffron rice. Mmm). |
Greybeard |
Must make a big batch of chilli myself soon, I usually cook enough for 12 meals or so and pop most in the freezer. You might appreciate the chilli contest joke http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/544975/posts |

PMSL David! Poor Frank had a bad day out! I grow my own chillies every spring; the hottest varieties I can find. My grandmother was Indian and taught me to cook, but she also passed on a serious addiction! Blimey - how did we get here from American thread standards lol! |
Greybeard |
Greybeard, You mentioned chilli con carne for dinner and I think that was the main start of the thread drift. I've got these 2 near me http://www.uptonchilli.co.uk/ and http://www.simpsonsseeds.co.uk/acatalog/New-Hot-Chillies.html IIRC the walled garden nursery. I've been to the latter and it was quite a nice place to visit and right alongside Longleat so strolled through there also with a friend. We bought a few plants and seeds also for later use. I have a fondness for chillies and Indonesian Sambal after being introduced to it years ago by a half Dutch girlfriend. |

Grey, to kick a guy whilst he's down those where Phillips not Pozi :) David, I'd seen a similar joke to that before but boy did that make me laugh. My wife can't eat chillies so when she makes me a chilli con carne it's either very mild or red hot as she doesn't taste it whilst cooking it. Our friend is a constant chilli eater and xmas this year at his house he assured my wife there were no chillies in any of the traditional turkey dinner, her mouth lit up and then he remembered that there were four chillies in the roast gravy. |

The pieces I am referring to are Allen socket head set screws for the 12G1316 head and maybe others. My supplier in the US can get any diameter and length of set screws in box lots. When I buy a box I will share the wealth for only the cost of postage. If they are available over there, I'll just have extras. At least I will have some recipes to try. |

WOW - M*ss do a kit for £20.86 A bit pricey! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182433571783 |
