MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Head lamp bowl size

I wonder if anyone could tell me what size hole is in the front wings for the headlight bowl, unfortunately I forgot to measure the hole size before I got rid of the wings - I am fitting a lenham bonnet so I need to cut out the holes.

On a 1500 wing it measures 163mm across but they should all be the same

Thanks very much I shall buy a 160mm hole saw.

Hi Mike, buying a 160mm hole saw is expensive & not necessary for cutting out your headlamp holes.
I have a GRP flip front on my sprite. To cut the holes for the headlamps I used the following technique (copied from a magazine):
1. Mark out your opening.
2. Drill a series of small ~5mm holes around the circle ensuring that you do not go beyond the desired opening. Each hole should be about ~20 - 25mm apart.
3. Using a junior hack saw blade, join up the holes to complete the circle.
4. Remove the rough edges with a flap sander in a drill (or similar).
Just be patient drilling & the more holes the neater the result before sanding. I was pleased to achieve good results this way. There is an image of the result on my flickr pages:

Nice looking car, I too will have a fibreglass front (Lenham) where did those flip front hinges come from they look so much more substantial than the set up from CCK.

160mm hole saw is £25.00 on Ebay - I sort of like hole saws and have a vast collection of them but not as big as 160mm.

I have used your method many times on all sorts of materials so I need to weigh up £25.00 versus nil cost just time

Martyn, (sorry, don't know where Mike came from)
The front including the hinge was from Tofosi Rana. I think the conversion is now with Hall’s Garage. They are at Folkingham Rd, Morton, Lincolnshire PE10 0NS, Tel: 01778 570286.

why not just mark the circle, drill one hole and use a jig saw?
