MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Headlight Switch Wireing

I have a replacement switch for the headlights in my '72 midget. I took it out to see if I could open it up and clean the contacts. These new switches are glued together!!
Now I need to know which wire goes where.
The switch is a 3 terminal, marked 1-2-3-4-5. 4 and 5 have no posts.
IIRC 1 is Brown 2 is red/grn and 3 is blue?

I took one of these apart to repair recently. There are 3 terminals:

- one on its own: brown feed

Next 2 in-line (vertically, when swtich in position)

- one nearest the switch middle is side-lights (red)
- one near the edge of the switch is headlights (blue).

Inside the switch is a spring, controlled by the toggle, that moves a plate that slides to make connections.

The plate is always connected to power post; when switch moved, the plate slides over the side and then headlight posts.

Thanks Anthony that makes perfect sense and is more in line with what I remember than what I posted above.

Not so fast Phil,

IIRC...there where several type of after market switchs...that eventually got made into one universial switch thur moss and VB. and is dependent upon what wiring you have determins which post it goes on

definatly give Moss tech a call 1st.

Unfortantly when I went thur this it was several years back and I simple cant rememer the details....Id certian wire in some temp. in line fuses until its sorted...remember there are no relays so your dealing with traight 12 volt power

Prop...Fire in the hole.

BTW...How is you son doing? Ive certianly thought about you and your family over the holidays

Hi Prop

Wiring a headlight switch is generally not dangerous. The worst that can happen if you get it wrong is the lights come on with the switch in the wrong position.

There's no chance of +12 being switched direct to ground.

I have tested the switch and its fine.
When I have power to the switch, (brown wire only) I get power to the parking and headlight terminals as I move the switch.
When I plug in the red/gr and the blue wires I do not get power to them. I'm going to look at the dimmer stalk and check/ redo the wireing behind the grill this weekend.

Thanks antohony,

Im certianly no electrician, but If its possiable to set fire to wires, Im the expert in that field

Phil...do you have the little toggle switch on the steering column that powers the insrumeent light...also check your bullet connectors, any rust or moisture...(and most likely will be with the weather we are having will make an issue

BTW PHIL....If you need me to look at my wiring on the switch, let me know.
