MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Heater valve thread

Does anyone know what the thread on the 1275 heater valve is?
David k Brenchley

*IF* you mean the one on the heater trunking flap fitted the wrong way round it's called "Curious heater issue".

If not I'm as usual clueless.
Nigel Atkins

I think David means the screw thread, but I don't know. And which one? The tap on mine is made of at least three parts all of which screw together IIRC.

I guess the one from the tap into the plinth?

AdrianR

Yeap, I'm clueless again, I read David's post as where instead of what.

Sorry.

David,
you could email Ashley Hinton, he'd know as he makes them.

What goes into the cly head is a pipe thread but I'm not sure what size

Cylinder head is just a hole, above that is a gasket then the adapter then a shim/washer to move the tap around for the different inlet location on the round/single box heater/blower. It's the tap and adapter together that have threads, quite course IIRC.

To clear any confusion, the thread on the tap that screws into the adaptor plate. During our clutch change the valve came off in my hand - brass v/v, alloy plate, iron head = corrosion. Looking to replace the v/v with an adaptor and connect to hose, never close valve anyway.
David k Brenchley

IIRC the Austin A35 had the heater valve on the heater, so it just had an adapter with a spigot on the head.

I may have one somewhere.

If you are dispensing with the heater valve and keeping the heater (which is important for cooling the block rather than blanking this outlet off - there is a re-route the outlet option too with heater delete and returning the water outlet to the engine) you might want to use: https://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Cooling_heating/Heating/Valves/12G2534.aspx?070103

I am away from my car, so cannot remember if the heater hose is 5/8" bore or 1/2" (can get hose adapters - look under cooling on Minispares)

Mike, perfect thank you.

David

You are welcome.

Here's a version for 1/2" hose: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUSTIN-A35-A30-HEATER-FLANGE-AND-TUBE-FITS-ENGINE-2A441-/292301602140?hash=item440e887d5c

If you want to go down the replacement tap route the above supplier - Ashley Hinton - does them I think: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ashleyhintonmgparts2002

Just for conversation, I remember a very long time ago fitting one of these to a 998cc mini head - https://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Engine/Cylinder_heads/Head_components/12A2075.aspx?100402 - may be what would work into the surviving plinth mount for the heater. Note they mention the thread size - 5/8" 16 threads per inch Whitworth fine and a tip to recut to a more easily available thread and use one of these: https://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Exhaust_and_manifold/Inlet/Inlet/12H1405MS.aspx?110202

To top from Dave above on the A35 part - this is in the Ashely Hinton link in a previous post.

Cheers

As Mike and Dave have put, 1/2" hose adapter from Ashley Hinton.

Plus if your head is anything like mine you might also want to use Hylotyte Red 100 semi-hardening jointing compound, it's worked when the blues ones haven't.

If you decide to keep a tap/valvle then through experience I'd recommend sticking with Ashley Hinton, though I can't see it listed on his ebay at the moment.

You can see the adapter/base plate thread here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-midget-AUSTIN-HEALEY-SPRITE-MORRIS-MINOR-HEATER-TAP-BASE-PLATE-PART-ACA5456/292335827253?hash=item441092b935:g:LlAAAOSw44BYiIgW

Mike,

That page is wrong as 5/8" BSF is 14 TPI and 5/8" UNF is 18 TPI.
