MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Help where do the fuel and brake pipes go?
Can anyone help with the routes and clip locations for fuel and brake pipes, mainly the front to rear one. I am re-shelling using a heritage shell which doesn't appear to have the clip holes. Do both pipes go through the transmission tunnel? Thanks. |

mine go under the car along one of the rails there |

one each actually; fuel pipe runs under the floorpan, clipped to the inner edge of the driver's inner seat mount stiffener, then across the rear crossmember at the tunnel mouth, then along the lefthand chassis member as far as the front crossmember, then up to the front carb. Brake pipe runs inside the tunnel. |

Hmm will have ro check that than. Though i do not know which is safer...... |

Safest option is inside the car Originally they were as described above |

here are a few photos of mine first one is a shot down the tunnel, showing the brake line (the skinny, braided brake line with the red cap is dangling near the fuel pump) (note, the fuel pump is only temporarily stuck into its hanger here, and not hooked up to the flex lines yet) Rear axle and fuel tank are removed for clarity. here's the next photo, showing you how that brake line comes through the front end of the tunnel (engine and transmission removed for your viewing convenience). That other pipe that comes from underneath and passes by the brake line is the vapor line (US spec car) that you could see, in the previous photo, to the right of the fuel line. The middle line here (at the bottom of this photo) is the fuel line, running up to the front, as described by David above. |

here is another close up, showing those three lines and how the fuel and vapor lines run on either side of the seat reinforcing "rail" under the body, and the brake line goes inside of the tunnel. |

last one! here is the fuel pump, finally all hooked up, and the rear axle is installed so the brake flex hose is now attached to it too. That silver "smudge" on the body near the union in the vapor line is anti-seize. After finding all of the joints rusted solid, so they all broke and stripped when I took this car apart, I made sure to give a coat to all of the threads, and around where the pipes went into each fitting (but, of course, none on the sealing faces!). Right after this photo, I then stupidly kinked the fuel pipe when I put the fuel tank in ("hmm, what is the tank hanging up on? I'll just give it a strong push then."). Oops. I took it apart, annealed the cu-ni pipe with a propane torch flame and then squoze the kink out with the careful use of a mandrel and a soft faced vise. Whew. Memo to myself: stop when you get tired, instead of saying, "I'll just put one more part in tonight..." Hope this helps, Norm |

ok, one more, though you didn't ask! ":oD Here is the engine room (once again, I removed the engine for you to see clearly) I was super careful to copy each new line from the old, factory one, so I feel pretty confident that this is how they all were routed in 1974 when the master craftsmen at Abingdon lovingly caressed my car into existence (in between bitter labor disputes). Norm "why doesn't he have an engine yet? Is he waiting on Prop or something?" Kerr |

Thanks a lot Norm, a picture paints a thousand words as they say, makes more sense now. At times like this I wish I'd kept the ols shell a little longer. I really appreciate you removing the engine and gearbox just to take some photos, ha ha. Once again thanks. |

" I really appreciate you removing the engine and gearbox just to take some photos" and the front wings, front suspension etc!! LOL |
