MG Midget and Sprite Technical - HI TORQUE STARTER

I'm shortly to instal a high torque starter supplied quite reasonably by "the other MG car club" spares people.

Do I fit the spacer I removed with the old starter or not?

a little more info is needed?

is this on a 1500 or a 1275

I did this on my 1275, there are 2 kinds of starters 1st one like mine, the mount is completely adjustable, just remove 2 screws and spin the mount to the place that it will fit and install, the other is perset just install...mine was a close fit and required cutting off one of the brake pipe tabs on the chassis rail, and was vary tight, but doable to install...I absolutly love the hi torque, it makes starting such a breeze esp. when the car has sat for awhile.

on a 1500...sorry I cant advise, but someone can and will be by soon.

given the lack of replies today it might be quicker to phone the supplier and ask them, make them earn their profit ! (sorry I don't know about 1500s either)

Sorry to tell you but a 1500 HT-starter from the MGOC doesnt fit without cutting out the panel on the nearest footwellside.
Bought one from them 4 years ago and returned it beccuase it just doesnt allow fitment in that tigh area.
Talking to them on the phone didnt help either and my guess is they didnt listen to me and sold it to the next customer.

Bought another one from Anglo parts who had a adjustable bolting ring on it but this one, although close, didnt fit either.
Returned that one too.

My midget is a left hand drive and hope there is a difference on it in comparison to a RHD but i fear not.
I hope for you they altered the design and that it will fit on yours!!

Let us know how you get on with this one as I am looking to fit a Hi torque starter to my 1500 too. hen I went to purchase one from Moss Bristol I wasa told that there were clearance issues with theirs and they didn't stock one that didn't need bodywork modification!

Any further info on one that will fit would be appreciated!

The guy at the other MG car club was no use whatsoever. So I contacted Powerlite, who supply the other MG car club people, who confirmed that I should instal it using the spacer.
I'll try it over the weekend and feed back.

Does n't fit, won't fit!
No problem clearing bodywork, bootom cormer fouls against engine block and starter will not sit flat against engine balck plate. So far Canley Classics with an adjustablem fitting plate and the power lite from MGOC won't fit.
Where next, what next?

back to the standard starter which suffices for 99% of these 40-year old cars !

Great for the 99% it's just us 1% who have to cross our fingers and toes every time you stop at a petrol station in the hope you and your tuned and slightly warm Midget will get on the road again!! Otherwise it's the joy of pushing it to the sidelines and waiting for temperatures to settle! :(

Saying this, I have just purchased a fresh original unit in the hope this will help as David says and I hope it works but only time will tell, I plan to fit on monday so i'll let you know how it goes!

Given that we 1500 owners appear to be stuck with the original spec starter casing, would a custom/quality rewind/rebuild cure whatever it is that ails the original design? I.E. why do they fail so often? I've a local shop that rewinds generators and starters for older tractors and ag equipment, they come highly recommended. Might they cure whatever ails the original spec 1500 starter? Just a thought.

Well I bought a brand new starter unit from moss for about £35 all fitted up and so far no problems, you can still hear a bit of a struggle from the new starter when the engine is hot but so far she has fired up everytime. Hope this helps
