MG Midget and Sprite Technical - HIF 6 / 44 Throttle Springs.

Finally got round to fitting my HIF6 this afternoon/evening.

Not had it on the road yet - runs well on a BDL needle as a first choice - pending Aldon R/R in Dec.

The throttle spring seems very light compared to the 1-1/4's.
Do any of you run additional return springs as well as the inbuilt ones ?

I did when I ran one.
Otherwise it would not go down in rpm
Onno K

Mine has an external spring.

"Do any of you run additional return springs as well as the inbuilt ones ?"

Nope, haven't needed to. As with Dave's the internal spring works fine on my HIF44..
Lawrence Slater

My HIF44 is fine with the standard spring, but if I do a little competition next year I understand that a secondary spring is required.
Mike Howlett

My HIF44 has a srong external spring and does not need a second spring
Chris H (1970 Midget 1275)

I have two additional external springs on mine
1. Because I like a firm pedal
2. The scrutineers like to see additional return springs
3. I feel that the revs drop more quickly

Took it around the block tonight - seems quite an improvement ! - will see in Dec at Aldon ! (been on their r/r before so should be a good back to back test).

Can't see an easy way to attach another spring (have Maniflow manifold,Titan inlet with Mini throttle type cable plate) - any pics of how you guys have fitted one ?

I did take a pic tonight whenI was in the garage, but it didn't come out well, as my 'phone has no flash.

I can try with a 'proper' camera tomorrow!
Dave O'Neill2

No image but mine has the springs attached from outer rim of the K&N air filter to the throttle returns. One either side of the carb.
frogeye Gary

Mine's happy with the standard "built-in" spring Richard

You should be fine with a BDL which was in mine until Peter Burgess "refined" it
Bill1

I did all kinds of things to my engine that I expected to require a richer mixture - 60 thou overbore, higher CR, metro head ported, lcb etc. - and the recommended needle after a rolling road session was, yes, a BDL!
Chris H (1970 Midget 1275)

Here's a shot of my HIF6.

This is how it came from SU, so they must have thought it necessary.

Dave O'Neill2

Richard, are you any relation to Alex?
Pete Ottewell

Dave,

Thanks for the pic, mine does not have the quadrant - just a throttle arm - will try a pic later.

Pete, No.

This is a pic of the arm on mine.

And another.

That's exactly the same as mine, and no problems with the throttle returning. Important to have a smooth cable and run it as straight as possible. Not too long, otherwise it get's bent over when you shut the bonnet.
