MG Midget and Sprite Technical - HIF44 Titan manifold

Hi there,

In order to fund my engine conversion I may have sold my 1275 A series engine (to a 1098 equipped relative) but the 'recipient' wants me to help with a single carb option for simplicity / reliabilty.

I have looked back through the archives and the Titan manifold seems to be the only option which addresses all of the bonnet clearance issues.

BUT! I can't find anywhere which sells them anymore, does anyone know where they can still be found and / or a suitable alternative (i.e. fits a midget with a std bonnet).

Cheers

Automated search on Ebay - they crop up every now and again. And then be patient.

Dont worry about the 1.5" vs 1.75" versions - its the work of a few mins to grind out the smaller aperture to the larger. There is always talk of the mini vs midget versions with different angles.....but I dont think we've ever seen a picture of 2 next to each other to show the difference. My personal theory is that the reason the Titan works is the whole carb is mounted lower relative to the head rather than simply the angle.

I bought mine from ebay (complete with HIF38 ex-Mini carb) and opened it out to take a HIF44 and it fitted 1st time on the midget.

In the past there's a couple of hoarders in these parts who may offer one of their stock.

Cheers Dean,

I had looked on ebay with no success

I was hoping to sell the engine on sooner rather than later hence trying to find a 'quick solution'

Thanks

You can modify a standard mini one so the carb doesn't hit the boonet.

Simply mill the manifold to head mounting flanges at an angle. The bottom of the flange is milled to half it's thickness going to full thickness at the top.

When mounting it properly you'll need to fit some packers where you ground the thickness away.

I can get some pictures if you need them of mine.

I have one which needs grinding out. Drop me a mail if you are interested.

Thanks very much, I have sent you an email

You can also reduce height by chopping a bit off the carb piston ( plus of course the damper piston ) and fit a HS6 flat cap to replace the standard domed one.

I went through this last year, starting with a Mini Spares inlet on my '66 Midget. Dean is spot-on about the Spridget version mounting the carb lower. While there are certainly workarounds, I was shocked at the difference when I put the Spridget Titan next the Mini version. Here is a link to my thread with a photo at Spritespot.com:

Hope that helps!
