MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Horn not working
Finally traced the problem to lack of continuity between the insulated commutator on the steering column and the purple/black wire which emerges from inside the column and connects to the horn push.('68 Mk 111 with non-standard indicator switch) Now, does anybody know if its possible to remove the commutator to allow a new wire to be connected? |

My '67 B has the same arrangement. It must be do-able, it's just a question of how. |

that horn contact looks like it's already been 'adjusted' I don't know if these from Bs will give you an idea but here's a link - http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/hp.htm#1 and more general B horn info - http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/electricstext1.htm#horns |

The com is just push fit. It sits on a plastic bush/insulator that provides 'mechanical retention'. Carefully push the brass off the plastic (towards the bottom of the column) and all will become clear. You'll probably have to remove the inner to have any chance. |

Trying to sort out a similar problem on my 66 midget with a mountney. steering wheel. So does the purple wire in the centre of the column attach to that brass ring ? Is that a commutator ?. I will see if I can get a photo later of my set up... Might work it out between us ? Mike |

Commutator ?

Yep. That wire goes down the hollow part at the top of the inner column out thro a hole and connects to the slip ring after passing thro the insulating sleeve. The horns have a permanant live via the purple off the fuse and the earth path is via the purple/black, ie the horn push is shorting that wire to earth on the inner column. A simple check is to run a jumper wire from the purple/black connector at the switch loom and dab it to the inner column, the horn should blast, if not the inner column isn't grounded to the rest of the car or purple/black is open circuit. Hope that helps a bit |
