MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Horn Ring Hit & Miss
The midget passed her MOT but this was due to sympathetic tester ( horn worked on test so I'll give it a pass ). What he meant was that the horn only worked when turning right.Dead as a Dodo when turning the wheel to the left. Cleaned the copper ring but no change. Have any members heard of a kit supplied by Moss to cure this. Thanks Stew |

Might seem daft but have you checked that the spring loaded rod behind the horn push isn't sticking in and only touches part of the ring. |

Poor earth? |

Do you have a collapsible or solid steering column. As Jeremy said, it could be a poor earth. |

S Johnson, I had this happen on my '67, and after eliminating the ring and spring-loaded button as Dave suggests, it turned out to be the copper 'wiper' underneath the cover near the turn signal mechanism. A few potential problems. First, it has a very specific bend in it which can get relaxed over time, reducing proper tension against the fluted collar against which it rides, which, in turn, gets either low spots or oxidized spots. This produces intermittent dysfunction related to rotation of the steering wheel. After cleaning up the fluted collar with 1000 grit paper, I took some forceps and gently returned the profile (an 'S' curve, if memory serves) to re-exert consistent pressure on the collar. Second, if you've removed your steering column, it's possible to bump the collar up or down the shaft, which moves that wiper too close to the margin of the collar. Again, intermittent poor contact. Joel. |
