MG Midget and Sprite Technical - How to melt your MG badge

The MG badge on the front grill either fell off or was stolen. I just bought another today. It has to be glued onto a plinth so I spread a VERY thin coat of UHU on the back and left it to dry (non-porus surface etc). Within minutes the glue had disolved the red paint on the back of the badge and made the chrome plastic bubble. It now looks a horrible mess and fit only for the bin. I will have to buy another one (inconvenience, cost etc.). Any suggestions for a water/weatherproof glue that does not disolve badges!!

Did mine with silicone sealant. It didn't dissolve

I also used silicone sealant on my Austin Sprite badge. And they are irreplaceable. No problems so far.
Steve Church

I wish I had used silicon sealer!!!

Epoxy.

Depending on what the chemical componets are of the epoxy...most likely it will melt the plastic also.

I used the silicon sealent as well, that was 4 years ago with no problem...make sure its not the water base silicon

I thought the solvent in epoxy was water. I've certainly never had it attack anything (though a tube did get a bit bolshy with the neighbours once).
Jeremy Cogman

Had the same trouble, twice. Used Araldite in the end and no problem.
Brian

In general epoxy uses acetone in the compound as a thinner and acetone is usually highly corrosive on plastics. Most silicon products use acetic acid which is usually not harmful to plastic parts. I've never had any problem using silicon or RTV when securing plastic parts or even aluminum pieces such as the MGB wheel logos I used on the center caps on the midget.
Bill Young

I'm pretty sure I used Araldite.

Ditto. I bought some of those little MG logo appliques for the centers of my Rostyles, and used clear silicone to affix them. They're still there, years later.

To relate more to Chris's situation, back when I bought my Midget the logo button in the center of the Nardi steering wheel had faded from red to a sort of pink. This particular item is clear plastic, back-painted in red. I carefully removed it from the hub, sanded the back, and brush-painted it with new paint. Once that had cured, I used silicone to reattach it, and as the attached photo shows, it still looks great.

It looks like silicon is the stuff to use then. Gryf - the trouble with my badge was that UHU attacked not only the red paint on tha back but also the chromed plastic of the letters M and G and this could be seen from the front.

You could flag down an Autoglass van and ask the fitter to put it on with windscreen glue!
Mick - nearly ready to paint

Looks like you are going to have to buy another emblem Chris. That's a shame, they run about $25 over here, hope they are a little less dear over there.
Bill Young

Chris, don't feel bad. I did the same thing. At least they are not as expensive as the plinth!
C. J. Charvet

They are only about £5 (or $10) over here.

If you got time on your hands,,,you can use xylene (sparingly) to clean out the old paint, then use testers model paint and repaint it, thats what I did, but its pain staking....use clear coat 1st then the varoius colors over the top....but I think you can buy repreduction badges now for under $15 I think...not worth the hassle to re-do it, unless your broke with no work to do, and plenty of time on your hands.
