MG Midget and Sprite Technical - How to prepare a newly welded joint
Have just finished a bout of welding on the underside of my midget.. Question I have never managed to answer satisfactoryly is what to do next? 1) brushable seamsealer then stone chip paint 2) paint(smoothrite), brushable seam sealer, then stone chip.. 1 or 2 with underseal in the place of stone chip should I use etch primer? should I treat with tanin or phosphoric acid? Should I use a zinc based primer? Whatever you suggest, I want to do my best to stop rust reappering.. Tim |

Tim I like to use BondaPrimer before applying seam sealer and then my chosen finish. Carl |

Clean all crudd off using a wire brush in a drill, then clean surface using panel wipe or celly thinners to remove any oil/grease contamination. next coat with etch primer if you have it, or as previously mentioned, Bondaprimer (zinc primer) is excellent stuff if you can find it. It's a celly based red zinc primer, that can be brushed or sprayed. The brush applied paint covers very well, and goes a long way. The spray cans are expensive and don't cover much. It's available mail order from Bondaglass Voss http://www.ribaproductselector.com/company/984/overview/Bondaglass-Voss-Ltd.aspx Cheers John |

I can recommend etch primer. I have painted a shell in it which has sat for 6-8 months or more, and no rust has appeared. Followed by seam sealer, then 2 pack primer would I think seal it very well. |
