MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Hyundai Coupe seats?

Hi

I've spent a lot of time reading this BBS but never posted until now, so hi!

My wife has crashed her Hyundai Coupe, my midget seats are the original vinyl, falling apart! Has anyone fitted Hyundai seats in a Midget? They're leather and seem ok widthwise.

Any advice welcome - 1275 1969 Mk3

Heck yes id give it a try...those look great ... will they fit ? Tape measure is your best friend but a good hammer and a metwl cutting saw and some duct tape can make just about anything fit....haha

That said above ... its not going to be an exact plug and play fit... its going to take some imagination and like most mods work it wont be a sunday afternoon play date

but id so give this a go... im a fan of what your thinking... take photos and keep us posted as to your progress... i want to see the completed look

btw... im not aware of any one doing or have done this seat to midget combo ...your the 1st.... but im in your corner if that counts for anything

Hi Prop

Thanks for your kind response.

The Hundai is 2002 and I've tried to attach a photo of the seats - they're 21" so should be ok width wise.

The width at 21 im thinking is a winner ... i want to say midget is 22

measure the floor to seat height (were your butt meets the seat)

and the over all height from floor to top of the highest part of the seat

and the deepth back of the seat to where your legs spill over

get me those spec and ill compare with what i have ... which is great shape orgianal rebuilt

one possiable advantage you may have is the placment of your seat belt release... that will save some space and from my phone image it looks like it may be able to use the current mg harnes and lap section ...hope any way

Id see if you can use the center consel also

what other goodies do you have on the wifes car

radiator ? Elecric radiator fan ? Carpet ? Switches, fuse box , relays ect ect. Interior Dome lights to fit inside the boot or engine bay? Gauges ?

Peter,

Welcome to the board. As you've seen, this is a very helpful and friendly place. Could you give us some info about your car?

As Prop says, go for it. It may take a bit of fiddling but that's part of the fun of owning one of these cars. I would pull one of your seats and drop one of the Hyundai ones in and see how it works.

hi Peter.

hope your wife was ok after the crash.

thank god it was only a Hyundai.

welcome to the BBS.

Here are the measurment i got on the midget... mind you the seats are in greaf shape but like fine women age does distort reality abit

side to side is 19 inches... but between the tranny tunnel and the (other side under the door ... yep thats the offical name) is 21 inches so it will be tight but i bet it can squizze in there with a big enough shoe horn

the seat base is slanted and goes from 9 inchs to 5 inches in the rear

the over all heith is 29 inches and thats with the D shaped head rest

the front to back depth includes the back brace section is 21 inches

so really the only place i see a concern is the width but id think its doable

you maybe even able to swap the under carage so its a direct fit to the floor

hope that helps

Don't forget to allow for the handbrake.
I recently bought some MGF/TF seats for my MGB. I measured the near side, as that was most accessible - I forgot about the handbrake!

So...if anyone would like some nice MG TF seats, which do fit in a Midget, but not in an MGB, let me know 😕

step away from the big macs... stay calm... and put down the fries

how does that happen. A mgb is actually smqller on its waist... thats just crazy....

btw... no i didnt account for the hand brake... could just cut that out its near useless anyway.

Prop. The space between the tunnel and the sill on a B is smaller than that on a Midget because of the much wider sill on the B.

Those Hyundai seats look very supportive. Even more than the mgtf seats that I have in my mk3 Sprite. But they do look very bulky.

HI Peter

Welcome!

Just take out a Midget seat and see if the Hyundai seat roughly fits. Try the passenger one first. Also do you have the correct size socket spanner to remove the steering wheel if you need to remove it for access for the new seat fitting?

If you do replace the seats, try to keep the original Midget seats to go with the car when you sell it.

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for all the advice!

If the rain ever stops I'll take out one of the Hyundai seats and go to see my MG guru who will have Midget shells in various states of progress, hopefully I can see if there is a chance of it fitting without having to take out the MG seats.

Mike, I have a spanner to fit the steering wheel, but thats for use when they try to remove the car from my cold dead hands! I've had it since 1976 :-)

just as a follow up - we tried the seat in a midget and it just fitted width wise, but it was pushing me too close to the steering wheel. I'm 6'1" and had trouble getting my feet past the door hinge.

So I'll keep the old ones!

Well that sucks... good try anyway

a popular seat that still common in car grave yards that fits the midget really well is the

mazda MX5 seats

Hi Peter, I asked a similar question regarding MGB seats. I received replies from all over the world, most saying it was an impossible task. With a substantial amount of replies I was about to give up. One day I thought "sod it" I went outside removed the original seats, took a tape measure and found mgb seat fixing bolts were 2" closer together than midget fixings. An easy solution: drill 4 holes 1" in from original holes. Cutting a long story short, DON'T LISTEN TO ANYBODY TRY IT YOURSELF.

You might not believe it but MGF (or TF) seats will fit a Midget but are too wide for an MGB! The side sill being very wide and intrusive.

I have MGF seats in my Midget and they are really good but I had to remove the roll cage to get enough rear movement, and fitted a 14" wheel so I could get in easier (I'm 6ft). The backs are quite thick on MGF seats, I think MGTF seat backs are a little thinner.

I tried MG ZR seats from a 3 door with moveable backs but much too wide.

MX5 are popular as Prop mentioned and some have speakers in the headrest!!

Also heard Fiat X1/9 seats are good though difficult to get hold of. Lotus Elise are very good, though very expensive.

Though, nothing can compare to the price of a free set of seats.
