MG Midget and Sprite Technical - In search of Laygear for Midget (1275 engine)

I need a replacement laygear for my 64 midget (1275 engine).
Victoria British, Moss, and Little British are all out of stock. Zip on eBay.

The salesperson at VB told me they have been searching for a part supplier since May. This is distressing.

Can anybody recommend another source with this in stock?

1275 engine, but which gearbox?
Assume it's a ribcase but be aware there are different versions, Type A and Type B gears with different helical cut. What number is on the input shaft (view it through the inspection hole on top of the bellhousing) - 22G172 or 22G229, or even 22G1117 although the latter is rare. If your input is a 229 or 1117 then you want laygear 22G1100 and Moss UK list it. The earlier Type A gears are unobtainable new, you might find a NOS or a good used one if lucky.

By my book, originally it would have had B type gears. But of course it may have been changed at some stage in its life. Have you tried outside of the US?

We do have a couple of new 22G1100's here if you are stuck.

The 1964 model year was a funny one, transmission-wise.

a '64 would have come with a 1098 and a rib case transmission, of course, but when the engine in your car was later changed to a 1275 they might have changed your transmission to a later one, or they might not have

Here's why it matters to you: the first 6 months of '64 rib case production still used the earlier A gears (steeper helical angle) and those are not compatible with the B gears used ever since, and as David pointed out, the A gears are NLA.

The date on the outside of your transmission should tell you whether it is from before or after that change point (6/'64). Even if it is from before the change point, it is possible that someone has rebuilt your transmission before, and already put in a new set of B gears. The laygear number, input shaft number, or visually comparing the angle of the teeth with a known gear from a later transmission, will tell you for sure.

Further details on my layshaft:

Etched into the layshaft is the part number 22G83.
Etched into the input shaft is the part number 22G171.

In broadening my search outside the US I have come across some new 22G1100's and a few used 22G83s.

Probably a dumb question, but are the 22G1100 and 22G83 interchangeable?

In a word, no unfortunately. If my book is correct, 22G83 is a Morris Minor laygear, so the box has obviously been got at in the past.

The only way around this I've found is to get a complete recond B-type gearbox.

PS I misread your original post, didn't read the year of the car correctly. As Norm points out, it could have either type.

agreed 22G171 and 22G83 = a Morris Minor gearbox. The box uses bushes instead of needle rollers so is weaker and wears faster. Also a bigger than ideal gap between 2nd and 3rd gear, hence the development of the close (closer) ratio gears in the proper Midget box.
