MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Indicators

This is my first posting having recently purchased a RWA model.

As I find the indicator warning lights difficult to see in bright sunlight, and they dont always self cancel, I am considering adding an audible alarm. Has anyone else tried this proposed modification? All comments appreciated including identification of a suitable item, supplier, wiring etc.

Hello Doug -

I recently replaced my flasher unit - the new one ticks much much louder than the old tired one. Will probably cost you less than a fiver and 5 mins to fit it.

Maybe worth trying that first before getting into modifications?

Jon,

Thanks for that article. It explaines why I replaced my brakelight switch for at least 3 times in 6 years. Thats sofar the only downside of using silicone brakefluid. Maybe I should convert my brakelicht switch to something operated by the pedal as in later cars.

Doug,
Like you I found that my indicators did not always self-cancel. When the hood was down I cannot hear the flasher unit ticking (esp at speed) so I fitted a beeper unit from Maplin electronics shop. I just wired it across the flasher unit (just stuck the wires under the push conectors). It beeps when the idicators are OFF and is silent when the lights flash. It has not affected the rate of flash or anything else. It certainly avoids any confusion from a stuck indicator (I previously had cars pull out in front of me cos they thought I was turning!). The only down side is that the beeping is not the most pleasant sound and I sometimes feel a bit self concious when sitting at traffic lights with the idicator beeping away. Perhaps one day I will find a beeper with a more pleasant tone. Until then - it does the job.

Thanks for the responses.

I had plan to follow Chris' suggestion. Note that an article in the August edition of the MGCC Safety Fast magazine describes this modification for a B but assume it is also applicable to a midget)including Maplin part numbers and wiring diagram.

easiest place to find those wires is by pulling the hazard switch and tapping into the connections on the back.

The hazard switch has two green wires at one end and one fat wire and two thinner ones at the other end, its the two thinner wires you need.
