MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Interior Trim #$%!*?$#

I'm currently renewing the trim on my 1500. It's the worst job I've done, every panel is a complete bar steward. It's taken hours & hours - I hate it, I hate it.
Anyway, rant over. I've only got the door cards to do. Thought I'd leave the easiest bit till last - ha bl**dy ha.
Put all the clips in the position of the old ones, put door car in position - doesn't fit. Reason; the top edge doesn't go into the recess of the newly covered aluminium door capping. The question is do I slacken the bolts off to slide the door card into the recess. Once the door card is in place the bolts/nuts are inaccessible. Love to know what others have done/did.
I'm now going to have a cup of tea to calm myself down.
Cheers

Nigel:

After recovering those window arm rest door caps with new black vinyl a few years ago – as the material wraps around the numerous corners and curves would always produce a thicker covering of the corners and edges, etc and that might be the problem you are now confronting as you try to slide the door cards with new vinyl under the small gap form by the door cap cover.

My most recent (and long term) solution was to powder coat the top caps with a wrinkle finish black paint which produced the maximum clearance for sliding the door card up and under the aluminum cap. It also solves the problem permanently as long as I don’t change the interior color scheme.

However, sounds like you have already installed those nuts and washers to affix the aluminum cover to the door. In that case, why not use a “flexible” nut driver and just back off the nuts, etc. that should give you the “tilt” clearance to slip your door cards up and under.

Bottom Line? Fitting most of the midget’s interior door hardware requires flexible surgeon’s fingers!

Good luck with the last 10 percent of your interior project!

Thanks Mike, I'll try backing off the nuts. If I undo the right amount, I should be able to squeeze the card up which may keep the capping tight.

can you not space the top off with washers as spacers

Nigel. I've done this on a couple of cars without problems. You have to use the same thickness of hardboard, vinyl and foam padding as original for the door cards and make sure that the cappings have only one thickness of vinyl along their length where they meet the cards, ie. no extra folds at the ends.
At the top edge of the card, cut the foam about half an inch short, so that only the hardboard and vinyl slides under the capping. Slackening the nuts can be a PITA and shouldn't be necessary.
Hope this helps.
