MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Is this oil pickup baffle ok for road use?
Just thought I would ask the collective about the oil pickup baffle in my engine. I bought it this way, it was used in midget racing so is well baffled. Just wondered if it would be ok like this for road use as to me it looks like it will be very close to the oil pan bottom. See pic. I'm installing the engine Thursday so would like your opinions before than. Ta Rob |

I don't see why not. |

Does the pickup gauze rest on the bottom of the oil pan or some dimension higher? I had the sump off when I first got it and measured the distance from block face to pickup shield edge and compared it with the depth of the oil pan and it looked a bit close to me. Am I being unduly worried? Rob |

Looks fine and similar the one I had on my race engine. |

Rob Worth bearing in mind that racing cars have regular oil changes and periodic sump-off bottom end rebuilds, so the potential for sludge at the bottom of the pan to build up is lessened. Another argument for regular oil changes on a road car! Combined with using it regularly for a few good warmed up miles. Is the rest of the engine (and car) race prepped? If so, surely a sprint or hillclimb in road car classes beckons... Cheers Mike |

Id be tempted to drill about 1000 holes in it, Ive never seen anything like that Prop |

I bought the engine just because I needed it to put into a Frog I am refreshing. Examining it I found it was bored +60, fully balanced, high lift cam, fully baffled sump etc. A friend rebuilt it but all it needed was the bores honed, new piston rings (which were 3 ring type so not your run of the mill) new bigends and mains, new oil pump. The head is a late Metro or MG metro as it had hard valve seats for unleaded. It's more for relaxed runs really with a bit of excitement thrown in as I have tried to keep it standard. Standard wheels and tyres although I have put discs on the front. And a 3.7 diff too. We have had the car for 10+ years on it's standard 948cc and drums so hopefully I'll get another 10 years out of it and maybe it will se Le Mans this year. Rob |

If its 3 rings pistons...then there most likely aftermarket pistons make sure you dont confuse the orginal with after markets, the ring gap is is way differant and the rings are a differant thickness and not interchangeable Most likely the pistons are 21253 Nothing like busting piston landing to become an expert in this field Prop |
