MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Kevlar clutch

Spent sunday removing the engine to investigate clutch slipping.

The car has covered approx 1500 miles since the engine rebuild, a 7.5" rally clutch was fitted from peter may (type 9 gearbox)the clutch has worked fine until now, when the turbo kicks in the clutch slips but when pulling away or low revs it seems fine.

I do have a bad oil leak coming from the bell housing drain hole so I was expecting to see oil all over the clutch plate causing the problem but there was no oil contamination on inspection.

So my question is do I have too much power for the clutch? all kicking in at the same time and is there a solution if this is the problem, maybe Kevlar plates?

Or maybe the smallest amount of oil contamination that I could not see would cause it to slip?

As you are aware I know it needs a kevlar plate let me know if you need help.

Mine is fine now after I fitted my 7.5 inch clutch. I am still fighting this rear oil leak however. :(
Bob Turbo Midget England

I remember know Bob !
Its you who knows someone who does kevlar, I found someone in the states but no luck for the uk, would it be possible you could forward their details to me.
Thanks

I am that fed up with this rear oil leak too ! as the engine is out I am going to try another breather on the sump direct, at the moment I have one on the dipstick, two on the rocker cover and one on the rear of the timing cover.

Hi Rob

The details are available in Safety Fast (MGCC Magazine)

LOL

Just pulling your leg Rob!! HA HA

I will get the company information for you tomorrow.

What are we going to do about the oil leak?

I had the engine out and sorted the rear oil seal out and thought I had cured it. Was running in the garage with no leaks then went for a 100 mile blast on Sunday on return parked on the drive only to later find a little pool underneath. Dumped it in the gaage and wept!! Will take a look underneath to see what the story is when I can cope!!!

Bob
Glad to see you havent lost your sense of humour!!

Regarding this oil leak problem, mine is alot worse when i give it some welly and when i put the extra breather on the dipstick it did seem to ease it so all pointing towards a breathing problem, lets hope another on the sump will help.

Thanks in advance for sending the info on the kevlar, forgot to ask did you fit one ?

Thanks Bob your a star
Spoke to them today, they know their clutches.
They can build one to any spech I require using Kevlar.
As you say cost isnt cheap at £250 but the guy recons Kevlar lasts three times longer so if thats the case pro rata = £83
What clutch are you using with your turbo?? (you said you have just changed it)

Hi Bob

What sort of torque is your engine creating?

A
Anthony Cutler

Ant I wish I knew the answer to that but sadly I don't

Unfortunately by the time I got things sorted last year the MGCC rolling road day was booked up and I was unable to make use of that facility.

However shortly I will need to do a bit of top end tuning and so will go to my local RR at Lincoln. Will let you know when this happens.

Rob, A very long time ago I fitted my ca with the Toyota gearbox which it still has today

Last year the clutch I was using was a standard midget pressure plate with the hibrid midget friction plate and Toyota centre. The friction material was supposidly high performance.

At 80MPH if I put my foot down the clutch wou;d give up and slip

To rectify this I spent a number of months fitting a 7.5 inch clutch to my car. It is now a toyota plate married to a clutch cover that I selected from a large pile of OE plates bought by a friend of mine at a sale. What it is is a mystery but at the moment touch wood it is OK.
